Nearly five years ago, Studio Trigger released Cyberpunk: Edgerunners for Netflix. Equal parts standalone tie-in and critical to the years-long effort of redeeming Cyberpunk 2077, the anime took off in a big way and left fans hoping there’d be more of it.
And more has come with a sequel series, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, set once again in the hellish Night City and following a new crew of misfits. As revealed in recent days, our main cast is Edgerunning vet Weak Kingsley (Kentaro Tone), young journalist-to-be Roman Carax (Momoka Terasawa), revenge-seeking Netrunner D (Koki Uchiyama), and Talia Yang (Akari Kitō), a Corpo who likes to shed some blood. While light on plot, the teaser shows Roman will have his camera out every time he crosses paths with the other three during their violent exploits. And “violent” really is the name of the game, given how people go in some pretty brutal ways way here.
Despite a new cast of characters, much of the creative team from the previous series is back in action here. Kai Ikarashi, who helmed the season one episode “Girl on Fire,” is directing the whole season, joined by returning writers Bartosz Sztybor and Masahiko Ōtsuka, and key animator Ichigo Kanno on hand for character design. With a strong foundation already set up and no game they’re trying to make look good, the team has some freedom to go a little more all out this time around and try to make this new series stand on its own chrome feet.
The series’ official logline reads:
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 presents a new standalone 10-episode story from the world of Cyberpunk 2077— a raw chronicle of redemption and revenge. In a city that thrives in the spotlight of violence, one question remains: when the world is blinded by spectacle, what extremes do you have to go to make your story matter?
Look for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners II to hit Netflix this fall.
