Bitchat is a peer-to-peer messaging app that lets you send encrypted, private messages offline using Bluetooth. Available on Android and iOS, it keeps you connected securely even when you don’t have internet access.

About Bitchat

Bitchat is a next-generation instant messaging app created by Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter and the person behind the social network Bluesky. Privacy is built into its foundation: everything is encrypted and secure, and you don't need a phone number or email to sign up. Bitchat is also designed to work around censorship and restricted platform access, and it functions in dead zones where network coverage is unreliable or completely absent. It offers location-based chat rooms and automatic multi-hop message relaying through nearby devices.

Under the hood, Bitchat uses the Noise Protocol Framework, specifically the XX pattern, to establish mutually authenticated, end-to-end encrypted sessions between peers. It also uses Curve25519, ChaCha20-Poly1305, and SHA-256 cryptographic primitives for strong confidentiality, forward secrecy, and message integrity.

Why Should I Download BitChat?

Bitchat is a peer-to-peer, decentralized messaging app that lets you send direct messages much like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, or Signal. What sets it apart is its anonymous peer-to-peer system running over Bluetooth, which means no servers and no internet connection are required.

Messages travel directly from device to device, with each phone acting as a node that helps relay messages further through the network. All communication is end-to-end encrypted and exists only on your device since there is no server involved, meaning your conversations are not backed up anywhere. Lose your phone, and you lose your messages. The app supports password-protected chat rooms, uses message compression and adaptive power modes to conserve battery, and can automatically select the best available transport between Bluetooth and an internet fallback when one is available.

Bitchat also supports delivery acknowledgments, read receipts, and automatic message retries for more reliable communication, even on weak or unreliable connections. To protect against traffic analysis, all packets are padded to fixed sizes, and Bloom filters are used to prevent duplicate message propagation across the mesh network.

Currently, Bitchat uses Bluetooth LE with a range of 10 to 30 meters to build its mesh network. Wi-Fi Direct support is planned, which would extend the range to between 100 and 200 meters with faster speeds. Multi-hop message relaying can already push the effective range to around 300 meters, depending on how many nearby peers are available. The app also supports both broadcast and private message types, with automatic fragmentation and reassembly of larger messages to work within Bluetooth's packet size limits.

The interface is still fairly minimal, but that is not a significant issue. To start a conversation, you just need to know the other person's username. Currently, Bitchat supports text messages only, with support for additional message types and media planned once the app's binary serialization protocol, BitchatMessage, is extended.

On the security side, Bitchat includes replay protection, rate-limiting to guard against denial-of-service attempts, and periodic session re-keying for added safety. A Panic Mode feature lets you instantly wipe all data from the app if needed.

Is Bitchat Free?

Yes, Bitchat is completely free to download and use.

What Operating Systems Are Compatible With Bitchat?

Bitchat, also known as Bitchat Mesh, is available for iOS through the App Store and requires iOS 16.0 or later. An Android APK is also available for Android 8.0 and higher. Android and iPhone users can message each other across platforms.

What Are the Alternatives to Bitchat?

Signal is one of the strongest free messaging apps focused on privacy and security. You can send texts, make voice and video calls, and share files, all with end-to-end encryption. Built by the Signal Foundation, it collects no user data and shows no ads. Signal is available on Android, iOS, and desktop. It supports optional usernames so you can connect with people without sharing your phone number, and you can control whether your number is discoverable by others.

Olvid is another solid option for secure messaging. Unlike most services, it does not rely on any central server or directory to handle communications, removing the risk of interception or surveillance. Users are identified through advanced cryptography, with no phone number or personal data required to sign up. Developed in France, Olvid is available on iOS and Android and is widely used in sensitive sectors and institutions, though it is open to anyone. It also supports in-chat polls, one-click invites via QR code or link, and adjustable voice message playback speed.

Threema, developed in Switzerland, offers similarly strong security and privacy. Messages, calls, files, and polls are all end-to-end encrypted. Like Bitchat, Threema does not require a phone number or email, keeping your identity anonymous. Data stays on your device, and Threema's Swiss servers operate under strict data protection standards. Features include group and distribution list messaging, unrestricted file sharing, desktop and web client support, message editing and deletion, custom polls, emoji reactions, PIN and fingerprint-protected chats, optional contact sync, and text formatting.
