About Directive 8020

Available since May 12, 2026, Supermassive Games’ latest Dark Pictures game blends drama, survival, and horror in a gripping, claustrophobic experience where every decision can impact the story. With Earth dying, all hope rests on the crew of the Cassiopeia, a spaceship headed for the planet Tau Ceti f. The planet is believed to be habitable, and the mission is to survey it from orbit ahead of the arrival of the colony ship Andromeda.

“The future of all humanity depends on us. Or so we thought…”

Like the previous games in The Dark Pictures series, Directive 8020 is a narrative experience complete with jump scares, branching paths reminiscent of Choose Your Own Adventure books, and quick-time events (QTEs), where you have to press the right button when it appears on screen. Following Until Dawn and The Quarry, Supermassive Games returns with a survival horror game steeped in the genre’s most iconic films. Pitched by its creators as “The Thing in space,” it draws inspiration from Solaris, Alien, Event Horizon, Pandorum, Prometheus, Life, and Sputnik. Lovecraftian themes are also woven into the plot.

When the ship is about 72 hours from its destination, disaster strikes: a collision causes a hull breach, and it quickly becomes clear that an unknown organism is to blame. The adventure begins by focusing on two characters, Pari Simms and Tomas Carter, before they are joined by other protagonists. Pilot Brianna Young is played by Lashana Lynch (Captain Marvel, No Time to Die, The Woman King, Bob Marley: One Love, and more), while Commander Nolan Stafford is played by Danny Sapani (Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Black Panther, the Halo series, and more).

With its space setting, The Dark Pictures series is trying to reinvent itself, and Directive 8020 takes its time fleshing out each character, particularly through flashbacks that recount past events. The developers at Supermassive Games keep the tension high throughout the adventure’s eight episodes. As in Alien, the characters are separated and must deal not only with the threat posed by the creature but also with their own conflicts. This is all the more harrowing because the entity hunting down the crew can take on the appearance of its prey. So, who can they trust?

Why Should I Download Directive 8020?

Directive 8020 is a 3D narrative game. Exploration sections let you roam freely through the various rooms of the Cassiopeia. The ship, where the creature stalks the crew, serves as the backdrop for QTE sequences, stealth sections, and decisions that can alter the fate of each character, potentially leading to their death. As with the other games in the series, Supermassive Games delivers a true interactive movie that quickly draws you in. The voice acting is convincing, even if the lip-sync isn’t always perfect. The illusion is still very effective, and you’ll find yourself eager to discover what happens next.

Directive 8020 features several characters, and you play as five of them: Commander Nolan Stafford, pilot Brianna Young, senior mission officer Laura Eisele, medical specialist Samantha Cooper, and technical engineer Josef Cernan. The plot revolves around these five, although the game opens with sleep technicians Pari Simms and Tomas Carter. Compared to previous games, movement feels smoother and blends more naturally with exploration. The inventory system is also back, allowing you to equip yourself with various gadgets: a flashlight, a scanner, a hacking tool, and more. The game also has a few surprises up its sleeve, such as sequences where you monitor security cameras.

Supermassive Games sticks to a proven formula, but Directive 8020 still introduces a major new feature: Turning Points, which let you rewind time. Unless you choose Survivor Mode, which disables it, you can go back to the moment of a crucial decision or just before a pivotal event. This takes the sting out of a bad decision, a common source of frustration in previous games, and lets you explore the various story branches step by step without replaying the entire game or loading a previous save. Finally, the Movie Night couch co-op mode returns for up to five players, and an October 2026 update added online play, with each player needing their own copy of the game.

Is Directive 8020 Free?

Directive 8020 is a paid game. A Digital Deluxe Edition adds The Dark Pictures Outfit Pack, with costumes inspired by earlier Dark Pictures games; The Dark Pictures Collectibles, an extra collectible hunt tied to previous installments; a Cinematic Filter Pack with three retro visual filters; a digital artbook; and Jason Graves’ original soundtrack.

PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers can also try the full game for 1.5 hours before buying it.

What Operating Systems Are Compatible with Directive 8020?

Directive 8020 is available on Windows, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. It is not available on previous-generation consoles (PS4, Xbox One) or on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2. The PC version is available exclusively on Steam.

What Are the Alternatives to Directive 8020?

Directive 8020 has no shortage of alternatives, given the boom in narrative games in recent years, with varying degrees of success. Considered the spiritual successor to Until Dawn, The Quarry draws heavily on slasher movies to deliver a memorable experience. The game follows nine summer camp counselors left to fend for themselves on their last night at camp, under a full moon. Its Hollywood-caliber cast is impressive (David Arquette, Lance Henriksen, Ted Raimi, and more), and its direction is top-notch. The game shines in its ability to generate truly unexpected situations based on the choices you make, and its replay value is among the best in the genre. There’s even a Movie Mode to watch the story unfold without interacting, perfect for a night in with friends.

It’s impossible to talk about Directive 8020 without mentioning the game that can be considered the starting point for Supermassive Games’ success. A true benchmark, Until Dawn is an interactive slasher in which eight teenagers find themselves trapped in a mountain lodge one winter night. The game left a lasting impression thanks to the quality of its writing, the believability of its characters (played by real actors captured via motion capture), and the real impact of players’ decisions, both good and bad. Any character can die or survive, and the story adapts in real time. A remake released in 2024 gave this landmark of narrative horror a new lease on life.

To wrap things up, we’d like to recommend a game that relies less on branching storytelling than on an atmosphere similar to that of Directive 8020. Although it’s been around for several years, Alien: Isolation remains one of the most successful adaptations of Ridley Scott’s film. Creative Assembly’s game follows Amanda Ripley, Ellen’s daughter, stranded on the Sevastopol space station with a xenomorph on the loose. The alien’s AI, considered one of the best in video game history, creates constant tension. While the gameplay is more focused on survival and stealth than Directive 8020, it’s every bit as claustrophobic.
