It’s a bit esoteric, but Epson has just unveiled a new music-playing chip for cellular phones that could make anything—from the gimpiest clamshell to the “FREE WITH SIGN-UP” candybar—a music phone.
The S1V30220 plays back MP3 and AAC files and has an MMC/SD card interface and FAT filesystem support, meaning that all of the hardware and software necessary to add basic music functionality to any phone is essentially offloaded to a separate chip, allowing the main phone CPU to concentrate on phone calls.
