Graphene's Newest Trick Is Improving Your Tennis Game

Illustration for article titled Graphenes Newest Trick Is Improving Your Tennis Game

Graphene is a real-life miracle material. It's the strongest known material in the world, is going to bring us bendable batteries, and can even make saltwater drinkable. So what's next? Tennis racquets.

Graphene will be making an appearance in the newly redesigned YouTek™ SPEED racquet series from HEAD. The atom-thick layer of carbon atoms will be present in the racquet's shaft which, according to HEAD, lets the bulk of the weight go where it's more useful: the head and the grip. It's soon to be the weapon of the world's top ranked player, Novak Djokovic, who says the racquet will "give [his] game even more speed and control." Though whether or not that's directly due to the graphene is anyone's guess.

It's definitely not the most mind-blowing application of graphene, but it is cool seeing it start rolling out into commercial applications, whatever they may be. I'll take a graphene tennis racquet over nothing. But somebody better hurry up with those super batteries already.

Weather report: I'm a call foggy skies and high chances of total bs.

As someone who knows about graphene manufacturing and has actually made monolayer materials this isn't really going to be used as a thing.

They aren't producing sheets of graphene to rap their rackets in this is just marketing.

I didn't produce the pictures or see them but I know of a professor who took a tennis racket that said it was a carbon fiber enhanced or used some phrase like that and the professor actually searched with a microscope for the carbon fiber.

Yes they did find carbon fiber in fact they found three whole strands of it randomly on the racket. The carbon fiber was not being used in any way beneficial to the racket's performance. It had some carbon fiber so I guess it could legally be marketed that way but in reality it was bs. This thing will be similar. The important thing to note is they never said how much graphene will be present.

This might be the best racket you can get but not because of graphene.
