Captain America: Civil War

Following the release of this week’s trailer, the Russo brothers discuss the general thrust of the film:

Joe Russo: You cannot have a character called Captain America without examining the politics of what that means, especially in this day and age. The heroes in this universe operate under their own auspices, not under the directive of a government, and that can cause a lot of problems. There’s a certain level of imperialism that we’re examining – what right do those that have power have to use that power, even if it’s to do good? How do you govern that kind of power?

Adapting the comic book:

Joe Russo: We’re using the essence of what Civil War was about. The comic book isn’t applicable to the storytelling that we’ve structured up to this point, but the concept of registration, the notion that heroes need to be either monitored or controlled because their power can be scary, is applicable.

Anthony Russo: The challenge was, we’re doing the story of Civil War. Which everybody knows is nominally about superhero registration. And in a lot of ways that can be a political issue, and we didn’t want the conflict of the movie to solely exist on that level. We wanted to figure out very personal reasons why everyone’s relationship to this idea of registration is going to become complicated. That’s what the relationship between Steve and Bucky allowed us to do, to get very personal in terms of why people would lean one way or the other.

And they talk about Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross’ role in the film:

Joe Russo: The job is to tie all these films together. To be able to pull from The Hulk, which may have been forgotten about a little bit, and make it relevant again within the cinematic universe, is important to us. We thought it would be interesting to take a character who had a fanatical anti-superhero point of view. Now he’s become much savvier and more political and has put himself in a position of power, not unlike a Colin Powell. He’s cornering the Avengers politically now, he’s out-manoeuvring them.

Legends of Tomorrow

Bleeding Cool have a tantalizing rumor about plans for Legends of Tomorrow... specifically, its as-yet-unannounced second season.

The rumor posits that the CW intend to make the series akin to a live action Justice League Unlimited, with the members of the extensive team swapping out season to season. On top of that, they add that Constantine actor Matt Ryan is being courted to star as John Constantine once again, in a major leading role for of the purported second season, due to air in 2017. Vampire Diaries actor Steven McQueen is allegedly being courted to play another heroic role in the season.

As ever with unsourced rumors, a heavy dose of skepticism is indicated.

Supergirl/The Flash

Bleeding Cool also posted another rumor claiming that—despite official word declaring otherwise—CBS and the CW will team up to crossover Supergirl with The Flash for Sweeps week in May, citing purported worries from CBS about Supergirl’s ratings. Once again, take this with several grains of salt for now.

Doctor Who

Steven Moffat discusses the decision to create an episode that only stars the Doctor:

It’s a mad thing to do. I’m yet to find out whether I’ve just gone mad or not. It occurred to me that I had just written a huge monologue for him at the end of [episode eight, The Zygon Inversion]. Ten minutes. I was typing forever in that. And I just thought, ‘maybe we don’t need anyone else – we don’t need to cut to anyone nodding – it’s just him?’

It just puts it in a different place. If you’re not going to try things that scare you a bit, that scare everybody a bit, then it’ll feel what it must never feel – it’ll feel like an old show. I remember when Russell T Davies first brought it back, he said, ‘we can’t ever make it feel old. It always must feel like a brand new show.’ And that worked, and we carried on. But we’ve now got to the point where the new show is also old. Slightly marred by the 50th anniversary being two years ago, but the new show is ten years old. So you’re fighting that as well. You want to be doing things that are first/second series experimentation.

Iron Fist

Jeph Loeb speaks out as to why there’s been no news about this series since its announcement:

One of the things we wanted to be able to do was make sure that “Jessica” – which was a property that a lot of people did not know, and really, hats off to the people at Netflix who came up with the ad campaign, which is a sign that the world learned her name … Every time you start any property, whether it’s in comics or in movies or in television or in animation, everyone’s always looking for, “Tell us a little something about the next one, so we can get the jump on that story.”

There was a lot of speculation about what was going on with “Iron Fist,” because [fans] hadn’t heard anything about it, but there’s never been any change at all. We knew exactly what we were doing at Marvel and at Netflix. Let’s get “Jess” out there, everybody knows that “Luke Cage” is up and going. What I can say right now is, we’re very excited about “Iron Fist,” and the short answer is, yes there’ll be news.
