As someone who’s covered Nothing for quite a while now (almost since the beginning), there is one rumor that I’ve seen show up repeatedly, and it’s not about headphones, earbuds, or phones. It’s about the next obvious step: a Bluetooth speaker.

It’s all been rumors and speculation to this point, but if a recent FCC filing is any indication, that conjecture might finally come to fruition. As noted by Android Authority, Nothing has a new certified device with the FCC, and it’s formally classified as a wireless speaker. There isn’t much information yet, but there are a few details worth noting.

For one, the speaker is wireless, functioning off Bluetooth, and has an independent battery, so this isn’t something that would challenge Bose’s Lifestyle Ultra Speaker or Sonos’ Era 100 SL, both of which have to be plugged in while being operated. Most likely, it appears this speaker will be of the portable variety, though the size is still TBD. Thus concludes the list of concrete info.

There are no details on how Nothing might incorporate transparency or any of its other design calling cards in the speaker, or even whether it’ll even be released for sure. If there’s one thing that gives me faith that it will release a speaker, though, it’s the fact that CMF, which was formerly a Nothing subbrand, also seems to be looking in that direction.

In a new post on X, CMF dropped a big hint about its next upcoming gadget, which is (drum roll) a speaker. The CMF Speaker looks like it’s due to be released on Oct. 12, and there isn’t much official information on what we can expect, but it looks like it’s portable and has some hardware quirks, which CMF and Nothing are known for.

The one quirky feature that CMF alluded to in previous drips on its official X account is the ability to swap out the button—the X-shaped one you see in the image above. I can’t say for sure, but it looks like there are several options. Whether those are included or cost extra is yet to be announced, as is pretty much everything else with the speaker.

Either way, CMF is obviously moving towards its first wireless speaker, and if CMF is doing it, there’s a good chance that Nothing is looking that way, too. Only time will tell, but Nothing fans might finally get what they’ve been begging for.
