As Queen’s front-man, Freddie Mercury’s overpowering vocals, four-octave range, and thundering stage presence couldn’t be ignored. As a high-profile victim of the AIDS epidemic, his death on Thanksgiving Day, 1991 couldn’t be ignored either. Tonight’s Soundtrack honors Mr. Fahrenheit and marks the 20th anniversary of his passing.
Queen started as a prog rock band in 1971, comprising Freddie Mercury on vocals, Brian May on guitar, John Deacon on bass guitar and Roger Taylor on drums. Between 1973 and 1991, they produced 16 albums, produced the music for both Flash Gordon and The Highlander, and laid down what is widely regarded as the single greatest musical performance of all-time at Wembley Stadium in 1985.
Mercury was diagnosed with HIV shortly after Easter of 1987 and died of AIDS-related bronchopneumonia on 24 November 1991, seven years after his prognosis and just one day after publicly acknowledging that he had the disease.
