If you read the original announcement, there’s not a hint of surprise in Computer Shopper’s review of Sony’s stab at a conventional netbook, the Vaio W. Underpowered and uninspiring, though that 1366×768 screen sure is dandy. Come on, Sony. [ComputerShopper] https://gizmodo.com/sony-vaio-w-its-a-very-pretty-500-netbook-of-course-5308911/
With the invasion of too-cool-for-school iPhone games with 3D graphics and all sorts of eye candy, it’s hard to imagine Chess Wars being a raging success. Even while this multiplayer chess application seems absolutely splendiferous. The application is simple: Just select an opponent among your Facebook friends and challenge him or her to a game…
Microsoft’s now accepting app submissions for the Windows Mobile Marketplace, so they can begin the grand process of certification, which should “normally take about 10 business days.” Best part for devs is that they can actually monitor their apps’ progress. Microsoft’s also promising a “detailed report” explaining why an app gets rejected, if it does.…
So says the “first study of drivers texting inside their vehicles,” by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute. Long-haul trucks were lojacked with cameras for 18 months, and the results showed that drivers were 23 times more likely to wreck when they were texting. The results apply to everybody, not just truckers, they say. Scary. [NYT]
The problems that you might have with a Stretch Shelf start with the realization that you need storage space for something more than a couple of books. So you try and stretch out the rubber band to accommodate more stuff. If you’re lucky, you might just ruin the wall. If not, you or a loved…
Sean Kovacs’ excellent GV Mobile iPhone app, which makes it easy to get the most out of Google Voice, is getting yanked from the App Store for “duplicating features that the iPhone comes with.” Right. https://gizmodo.com/gv-mobile-iphone-app-hands-on-5231485 P.S. You can still grab it if you’re quick. The pay version’s only $3—if you think you’re getting Google…
Spotify wowed us as an Android app for Europe, and this iPhone demo is still scary awesome—there’s a million tracks to create totally customized libraries, with instant syncing to your phone and offline caching of your streams. https://gizmodo.com/the-month-in-android-apps-grey-cupcakes-have-delicious-5273233 Two catches: It’s still Europe only (boooo) and Apple hasn’t approved the app yet. But there’s always…
A Japanese company named Sumitomo Electric Industries has developed “the world’s first (pure) green laser diode.” This development could result in TVs and pocket projectors that are superior “in terms of size, weight and power consumption.” Light sources using lasers for display applications, such as laser TV’s and pocket laser projectors, are expected to have…
The Withings scale backs up its high-tech look with high-tech WiFi functionality—wisking your weight and body fat measurements to a web dashboard that can be accessed via a free iPhone app. The point, of course, is to track your measurements over time to help motivate you to achieve your fitness goals. It even compares your…
I was reading the feeds today and came across this “Intimacy Tracker” application for iPhone, a really ugly app that allows you to track your sexual life stats. The only good thing about it, however, was one of the reviews: I have been keeping stats of my sex life for years using a spreadsheet. I…
Developers, go download the iPhone 3.1 Beta 3 OS (and SDK) now. [Apple] Update: And it looks like you can cut and paste small videos. [9to5]
Sony Ericsson‘s official Twitter account asks the critical question of our age, “Mobile Apps: too many choices?” The answer choices are, um, interesting. The small irony here is that Sony Ericsson makes Windows Mobile phones, whose credo is that it’s all about choice. But what are you waiting for, take the poll! I, for one,…

Holy frak. Holy frak. HOLYROLLERBLADINGFRAK! Personally, I preferred the fixed camera, Alone in the Dark style of earlier Resident Evil games. But RE4, originally on Gamecube, evolved the franchise to the modern over-the-shoulder mechanic. And incidentally, it’s available in the App Store today for $8. While this port was previously released in Japan for other cellphone platforms, the gameplay clip…
