Even before Stranger Things came to an end earlier this year, the Duffer brothers have started putting their fingers in a lot of pies to establish their post-Hawkins future as producers. Hot off the release of their co-produced matrimonial thriller Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen with Haley Z. Boston, this time the duo is teaming up with Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews for what essentially looks like “What if we did Stranger Things with less ’80s, and more people pushing 80?”
The Boroughs stars Alfred Molina as Sam Cooper, who is dreading his move into The Boroughs, a seemingly perfect retirement community in the deserts of New Mexico—if you’re ready to give up on life, as Sam sees it. But as he starts getting settled into his new quiet life and meeting the other residents, Sam quickly finds there’s more to The Boroughs than meets the eye… and that you’re less likely to give up on life there than to potentially lose it at the hands of something sinister.
Aside from a murder’s row of character-acting talent—Molina is joined by Alfre Woodard, Geena Davis, Bill Pullman, Clark Peters, and Denis O’Hare in the main cast—the vibe of this first trailer is definitely all in on those Stranger Things parallels. Although The Buroughs doesn’t look as outright horror-tinged as Stranger Things, with plenty of wondrous mystery to go alongside the creepy things going bump in the night (including some alien-looking creatures that feel very Roswell Greys), it’s hard not to see why the Duffers would get on board with this as producers while they map out their future now that Stranger Things has come to a close.
The Boroughs hits Netflix on May 21.
