The NSA has named its first-ever primary adviser to its director for civil liberties and privacy protection—perhaps a little later than you may have hoped for.
After advertising for the position last year—in which the NSA noted that the “new position is focused on the future”—it’s become known that Rebecca “Becky” Richards will leave the DHS privacy office to start at NSA in February. Former Department of Homeland Security official Paul Rosenzweig wrote in a blog that “civil libertarians are skeptical,” adding that “it is fair to say that the job will be quite a difficult one.” You bet.
