Disclaimer: This page is written for adults. Explicit material is restricted to adults in India, and publishing or sharing obscene content is a crime at any age. VPN use is legal nationally in India, though some districts in Jammu and Kashmir have issued temporary bans. A VPN doesn’t change what Indian law prohibits. Gizmodo doesn’t encourage breaking local laws. Our interest is the privacy of adults whose internet provider blocks, and can monitor, the sites they visit.

In India, the same porn site can load on one internet provider and show an error on another. Since 2015, government and court orders have told internet providers to block hundreds of adult sites, and each one applies those orders in its own way.

Yet no Indian law stops adults from watching legal porn in private. Many people want to know which sex websites are legal in India and whether using a VPN breaks Indian law. A quick setup comes first, then the answers.

Note: Access to these VPNs requires a payment card and is strictly limited to adults. Use of these services is entirely at the user’s own responsibility and must comply with applicable law.

How to Watch Porn in India: Steps for November 2026

  1. Sign up for NordVPN and download its app for Android, iPhone, Windows, or Mac.
  2. Enable the kill switch to keep your browsing hidden from your internet provider if the VPN drops.
  3. Connect to a server in Hong Kong or Japan, where adult sites operate normally. Skip Indian locations and Singapore.
  4. Visit the site. If a pop-up claims the police have fined you for watching porn, close the browser and don’t pay.

Are Sex Websites Legal in India?

India doesn’t license or approve adult websites, and it publishes no list of legal ones. Instead, the law regulates what people do with explicit material. Adults who watch legal porn privately commit no offense, according to several court rulings. Publishing or sharing it is a crime, however, and child sexual abuse material is illegal even to view.

Courts have made the point several times. For example, the Supreme Court didn’t order a block during a 2015 hearing. In remarks from the bench, the Chief Justice asked, “how can you stop me from watching it within the four walls of my room?”

Later, in 2023, the Kerala High Court quashed a case against a man whom police had booked for watching porn on his phone by a roadside. Similarly, the Madras High Court said in a 2025 divorce case that private viewing, other than of prohibited material, isn’t an offense. Still, police have booked adults over porn on their phones, as the Kerala case shows.

What’s Illegal in India, Even for Adults

Most offenses fall under the Information Technology (IT) Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which replaced the Indian Penal Code in July 2024. The main offenses and their maximum penalties for a first conviction are:

  • Publishing or sending obscene material online: up to 3 years in prison and a fine of up to Rs 5 lakh (IT Act, Section 67)
  • Publishing or sending sexually explicit material: up to 5 years and Rs 10 lakh (Section 67A)
  • Viewing, downloading, or sharing child sexual abuse material: up to 5 years (Section 67B). The Supreme Court confirmed in September 2024 that viewing and storing it is an offense
  • Capturing or sharing a person’s intimate images without consent: up to 3 years (Section 66E)
  • Selling, distributing, or publicly showing obscene material: up to 2 years (BNS, Section 294)

In addition, watching porn in a public place can count as publicly showing it. Some Indian-themed sites also host leaked and hidden-camera clips, and sharing them breaks Section 66E.

Is Porn Banned in India?

No, but many porn sites are blocked. Blocking orders go to internet providers, which must then stop their customers from visiting the listed sites. The main orders so far:

  • July 2015: the Department of Telecommunications ordered 857 sites blocked, then partly withdrew the order days later after a public backlash.
  • October 2018: after an Uttarakhand High Court order, internet providers had to block 827 sites.
  • September 2022: another 67 sites, mostly Indian-themed but including XNXX, were blocked after two court orders.
  • July 2025: the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting blocked about 25 adult streaming apps and sites, including ULLU and ALTT.
  • February 2026: five more adult streaming platforms were blocked.

The Supreme Court, by contrast, hasn’t ordered a ban on porn. It set aside a petition for national porn curbs in November 2025, then dismissed it in July 2026 as a policy question for the government.

India also has no age verification law for porn sites. Draft rules reported in January 2026 would require age checks for adult content on streaming and social media platforms, but they aren’t in force.

Which Porn Sites Are Banned in India?

India never published the full block lists. Instead, the clearest picture comes from independent testing. A study released in March 2026 checked six major internet providers in 2025 and found 2,953 porn domains blocked on at least one of them. However, only 11 were blocked on all six. The table shows the sites people ask about most:

Site Blocked by (of six internet providers in the study)
xHamster 6 of 6
Pornhub 5 of 6
XVideos 5 of 6
XNXX 5 of 6
YouPorn 4 of 6
Chaturbate 4 of 6
RedTube 3 of 6
Eporner 3 of 6
Stripchat 2 of 6
SpankBang 1 of 6

Overall, Airtel blocked the most porn domains in the study, and You Broadband blocked the fewest. In 2020 tests, Jio and Airtel also blocked Pornhub by inspecting the connection itself, which a DNS change doesn’t affect. As a result, changing DNS settings restores some sites on some networks and fails on others.

Is xHamster Banned in India?

Yes, by internet providers. In the 2025 study, xHamster‘s main domain was blocked on all six internet providers, and many of its India-facing mirror domains were blocked too. Even so, watching legal content on it isn’t a crime, and its full site worked on our Hong Kong and Tokyo servers.

Is Pornhub Banned in India?

Yes, on most networks. Pornhub has been blocked since the 2018 order, and Airtel and Jio also blocked a mirror domain it launched for India.

Are Indian Porn Sites Blocked?

Many are. Most of the 67 sites blocked in 2022 were Indian-themed, and the streaming apps blocked in 2025 and 2026 were Indian too.

How to Watch Porn in India With a VPN

Connect to a VPN server in a country where adult sites operate normally, such as Hong Kong or Japan, then visit the site. This works because India’s blocks happen on each internet provider’s own network. A VPN encrypts the connection, and your internet provider can’t see which site you visit or match it against a blocklist.

We connected NordVPN, Proton VPN, and ExpressVPN to Hong Kong and Tokyo servers in November, and Pornhub and xHamster worked every time. Canadian servers worked as well, but they’re much farther from India. Choose the country carefully, though.

For example, Singapore blocks Pornhub, and the UK, France, Australia, and many US states have their own adult-site rules. Indian locations add nothing either, because the blocks don’t depend on where the site thinks you are.

Enable the kill switch before you connect. If the VPN connection drops, it stops all traffic until the VPN reconnects, and your internet provider can’t see the sites you visit in the meantime.

Is It Legal to Use a VPN in India?

Yes, nationally. No Indian law bans VPNs, and the rules introduced so far target VPN companies instead of users. For instance, India required VPN companies in 2022 to keep customer records for five years. In response, the major VPNs moved their Indian servers out of the country. Blocking orders bind internet providers and platforms, and we found no reported penalty for users who visit a blocked site.

In 2026, the IT ministry also warned VPN companies not to provide access to blocked betting sites, and a wider set of VPN rules is under discussion. For everyday uses, such as streaming and public Wi-Fi, see our guide to the best VPNs for India. There’s one local exception.

From May 2025 to at least January 2026, several districts in Jammu and Kashmir banned VPN use through temporary orders, and police filed cases against users. Indian law also applies with or without a VPN, and a foreign server doesn’t make illegal material legal.

Safety Tips for Adult Sites in India

Beyond the law, scams aimed at porn viewers are a common risk in India. A typical one is a fake “cyber police” pop-up that claims your device is locked and demands an instant fine through UPI. In that case, close the browser, don’t pay, and report it to the national cybercrime helpline at 1930.

In 2021, Delhi Police arrested three men who had collected about Rs 30 lakh through fake notices of this kind. Many of those pop-ups come through ads on free adult sites, and a VPN with an ad blocker cuts many of them out.

An email address used only for adult sites also keeps sign-ups away from your main inbox and helps with watching porn anonymously.

Best VPNs for Porn in India

Three VPNs showed Pornhub and xHamster in full on our Hong Kong and Tokyo servers. NordVPN adds Double VPN for extra privacy, Proton VPN blocks many of the ads behind fake police pop-ups, and ExpressVPN keeps setup simple for beginners. Our VPNs for porn comparison adds more VPNs that work with adult sites.

1. NordVPN: Best for Double VPN

Pros

  • Double VPN
  • App-level kill switch
  • RAM-only servers
  • Independently audited no-logs policy

Cons

  • Higher renewal price

Pornhub and xHamster worked in full on NordVPN’s Hong Kong server, and it was faster there than Proton VPN and ExpressVPN in our tests. For extra privacy, its Double VPN feature chains two servers together, adding a second layer of encryption. On top of the standard kill switch, an app-level kill switch closes chosen apps, such as your browser, if the connection drops.

However, like most VPNs, NordVPN charges more at renewal, and a longer first term delays that increase. Its Basic plan costs about $3.50 a month on the 27-month subscription.

2. Proton VPN: Best for Malware Protection

Pros

  • NetShield ad and malware blocker
  • Swiss jurisdiction
  • Open-source apps
  • Independently audited no-logs policy

Cons

  • Renewal costs more

Proton VPN’s Hong Kong and Tokyo servers also showed Pornhub’s full site. Its main advantage on adult sites is NetShield, a blocker for ads, trackers, and malware domains on paid plans. As a result, it removes many of the ads that show fake warnings or push malicious downloads.

Like the others, it renews at a higher rate, though a 30-day money-back guarantee covers the first month. The Plus plan comes to about $3 a month when you commit to two years.

3. ExpressVPN: Best for Beginners

Pros

  • Quick connections
  • Lightway protocol
  • Simple apps

Cons

  • Limited settings
  • Steep renewal

ExpressVPN’s apps are very simple to use, and it connected faster than NordVPN and Proton VPN in our tests. Its Tokyo location worked with Pornhub and xHamster too. Its apps also choose the protocol automatically, which keeps setup to a few taps.

Experienced users may want more settings to adjust, but beginners can leave everything on the defaults. Renewal is also expensive, though the lower rate applies for the full first term. ExpressVPN’s Basic plan is about $3 a month on the 28-month subscription.

Can You Use a Free VPN for Porn in India?

You can, but free VPNs come with limits that affect video sites. For one, most cap your monthly data, and Proton VPN’s free plan assigns your server at random from ten countries, including Singapore, where Pornhub is blocked.

Some free VPN apps also have unclear owners: in 2025, researchers found that 20 of the top 100 free VPNs in the US App Store had Chinese ownership. Our list of free VPNs for India covers the ones we trust.

Porn in India: The Bottom Line

Watching legal porn in private isn’t an offense for adults in India, but publishing or sharing it is a crime, and internet providers block most major sites. A VPN server in Hong Kong or Japan restores access to those sites and hides your browsing from your internet provider. Skip Singapore and Indian locations, and keep the kill switch enabled.

Also, treat any pop-up that demands a fine as a scam, and report it instead of paying. Based on our Hong Kong and Tokyo tests, NordVPN is the VPN we’d install first, due to Double VPN and its two kill switches. Proton VPN is the better fit for blocking scam ads, and ExpressVPN for the simplest setup.
