A few years ago, an adult site worked the same way in Texas, Florida, or London. Today, more than half of US states require age checks, and Pornhub has withdrawn from most of them. Meanwhile, countries from the UK to the UAE restrict or block porn sites.

Even where a site works, your internet provider can see which adult sites you visit, and free tube sites load trackers and pop-ups on almost every page. A VPN deals with both problems at once. First, it changes the location adult sites see, so you can unblock porn from a server where the site operates normally.

It also hides your browsing from your internet provider. We’ve tested 30+ VPNs this year, and these five are the ones we’d use for adult sites. Here’s the shortlist first, and we’ll get into detail right away.

In October, I tested ten of the biggest adult sites on each VPN, using New York servers. Pornhub, XVideos, XNXX, xHamster, RedTube, YouPorn, Eporner, SpankBang, Chaturbate, and Stripchat worked without problems. Where you connect determines which sites work.

For US visitors, the safe choice is one of the 23 states with no age-check law. All five VPNs offer US IP addresses in several of those states. Outside the US, Canada and the Netherlands are reliable choices.

Servers in the UK, France, and Australia won’t help with Pornhub, which restricts visitors in those countries. For Pornhub alone, our Pornhub VPN picks go further into its account and registration rules, which differ from state to state.

What a VPN Hides on Adult Sites

Without a VPN, HTTPS hides the pages you view, but your internet provider still sees the name of every site you connect to. The same goes for the operator of a hotel or café network. Once the VPN is connected, all they can tell is that you’re using a VPN.

A VPN helps with the sites themselves, too. Free tube sites fund themselves through ads, and some of those ads redirect to scam pages or follow you across the web. Each VPN in our list includes an ad and malware blocker, though some limit it to higher plans. There are limits I feel obligated to mention, however.

A VPN doesn’t clear your browser history or hide activity on a site where you’re signed in, so anonymous browsing on adult sites takes more than a VPN. Site data is another weak point.

In December 2025, Pornhub said hackers had obtained older analytics data about some Premium members through a former vendor, though not passwords or payment details. Sharing less personal data with adult sites limits what a breach can expose.

Proton VPN is a Swiss company that releases its software as open source. Each year, Securitum examines whether Proton keeps logs. With Secure Core enabled, traffic starts on a hardened server before moving to the one you picked. That protects your IP address even when the second server is under attack.

Its NetShield blocker stopped nearly every ad on our test page, and only NordVPN beat Proton VPN on download speed. Its renewal price is much higher than the two-year rate, however, so compare both on the pricing page before paying.

3. ExpressVPN: Best for Fast Connection Times

ExpressVPN connected faster than any other VPN in our tests, so moving to another city takes a moment. Its Lightway protocol keeps the connection stable when a phone switches between Wi-Fi and mobile data, and KPMG audited its no-logs policy in 2025.

TrustedServer, its RAM-based setup, clears every server each time it restarts. Its Advanced Protection suite filters ads and dangerous domains, and tracker blocking comes with the Advanced and Pro plans. The apps keep settings to a minimum, though the defaults work fine for adult sites.

4. Surfshark: Best for Sign-Ups With an Alternative ID

Surfshark lets you sign up for adult sites under a second identity. Its Alternative ID feature creates a separate name, personal details, and an email alias, so your own email address never goes on an adult-site account.

Messages sent to the alias are forwarded to your usual inbox, and CleanWeb removes ads and trackers on every plan. Surfshark had the lowest download speed in our tests, and its connections took a little longer than NordVPN’s or ExpressVPN’s.

For that reason, picking one city and keeping it for the whole session saves time.

5. Private Internet Access: Best for Blocking Ads on Tube Sites

PIA’s MACE blocker scored highest in our ad-blocking test, and every plan includes it. In practice, that means far fewer pop-ups and redirect ads on free tube sites. PIA also has servers in all 50 US states and in 112 countries, so it’s simple to pick a state without an age-check law.

Where Adult Sites Are Restricted in 2026

In the US, 27 states require adult sites to verify visitors’ ages, and Pornhub restricts access in most of those states. Louisiana is different. Pornhub still operates there and confirms ages through LA Wallet, which stores a state-issued license.

Outside the US, the rules range from age checks to complete bans:

Using a VPN is legal in the US, the UK, and the EU. Utah’s 2026 law did try to count VPN users by where they physically are, but that section is now suspended by court order. Countries that ban porn at every age still ban it when you use a VPN. In fact, the UAE penalizes using a VPN to commit or hide a crime.

Are “Unblocked Porn” Proxy Sites Safe?

No, not for adult browsing. A web proxy or mirror site relays your traffic through a third-party server. Its operator can log the pages you visit and inject ads or malware into them. In a 2018 study of more than 21,000 free proxies, researchers found 469 serving malicious content. A VPN, unlike a proxy, encrypts the whole connection and comes from a company with a privacy policy you can check.

Copycat sites are another risk. For example, some show a fake age check that requests card details, then sign visitors up for recurring charges. Older tricks such as the Wayback Machine, URL shorteners, or Google Translate don’t play video either, so they’re no use for porn. Porn Site Still Not Working on a VPN?

Most problems come down to the server or the browser. Try these fixes:

• Pick the server yourself. Quick-connect buttons choose the nearest location, which can be an age-check state or a restricted country.
• Delete the site’s cookies. A cookie from an earlier visit can bring back your old location, and a private window prevents that.
• Check the VPN’s own filters. ExpressVPN’s Advanced Protection includes an adult-site blocker, and Surfshark’s content blocker has an adult category. Disable them before visiting.
• Try a second server in the same city. A crowded server can stall video, and reconnecting assigns a new IP address.

Free VPNs for Porn: Proton VPN and Hide.me

Two free VPNs worked for adult sites in our tests, and the companies behind them sell paid versions. Proton VPN’s free version has no usage limit and assigns servers automatically, and on Android, guest mode skips account creation. Hide.me’s free plan is uncapped as well and lets you choose from seven countries, though it’s slower than the paid VPNs. For adult sites, pick the Netherlands, Switzerland, or Germany, and skip the UK and France.

Pornhub’s own free VPN, VPNhub, has closed. Most other free VPNs limit your data or show ads to cover their costs.

Summary

Most adult sites still work normally from a location without porn restrictions. Choose a server in Canada, the Netherlands, or a US state with no age-check law, and adult sites behave as they do for residents.

A VPN hides your browsing from your internet provider, but sites you sign in to can still identify you. On free tube sites, keep the VPN’s ad blocker enabled, and use an email alias for any account you create.
