They're Finally Pulling The Plug On The Paranormal Activity Franchise

In 2009, a little movie called Paranormal Activity was released and totally changed the horror movie landscape. Six years, three sequels and one spin-off later, this year’s sixth film, Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension, will finally end the series.

At least, that’s what producer Jason Blum told USA Today:

It’s coming to an end. This is it, the finale. We’re saying it before the movie opens. We’re not going to grind this horror franchise into the ground. This will keep Paranormal Activity as part of this culture and this particular time in a really fantastic way… All the questions that everyone has asked from the past ‘Paranormal Activity’ films: What does Toby look like? What’s the backstory to the families? These questions have been teased out. Now they will be answered.

Which sounds great and all, but has getting all the answers to all your questions ever been wholly satisfying, especially in pop culture? No.

Still, The Ghost Dimension has a pretty cool concept. It follows a new family who finds a video recorder and a bunch of tapes in their new house (very much like Blum’s other franchise, Sinister.) When they use them, the family begins to see frightening stuff, including characters from the previous movies, all of which will be in 3D. Gregory Plotkin makes his directorial debut on the film and here are some more new images:

By the way though, it’s worth mentioning this is a horror franchise. And very few horror franchises that said “This is the end” have ever actually stood by it. Who could forget Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday and Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare—both of which were followed by three more films? Even Blum acknowledges that. “At some point, might there be a reboot? You never know,” he said. “We’ve never discussed it. We made this movie like it’s the end of this Paranormal line for sure.”
