Tonight’s northern lights will be incredible, thanks to solar explosions

The sun blasted mass quantities of plasma into space a few days ago, and the “coronal mass ejection” is headed straight for Earth. Which means we’re about to get some incredible aurora displays.

Harvard astronomer Leon Golub explains that predicting space weather is an extremely inexact science, but that these times are likely to be good for viewing the solar debris as it hits our magnetic field:

* Wednesday, Aug. 4 – 3:00 a.m. EDT

* Wednesday, Aug. 4 – 8:00 p.m. EDT

* Thursday, Aug. 5 – 2:00 a.m. EDT
