Jamie Dorgan, the Director of Animal Care, said Thursday the Calgary Zoo is launching an investigation after seven Humboldt penguins drowned in a holding area, calling the deaths “devastating news.”

The Veterinary Team at the Zoo performed necropsies, which determined the birds drowned to death. The zoo said it “regularly uses” the holding area where the penguins died, so the deaths comes as a shock. The Calgary Zoo wants to “understand what happened and prevent further incidents like this from happening again.”

A total of 15 penguins remain in Humboldt county.
