Announced at CEDIA last September and finally shipping, here’s the Cambridge SoundWorks Radio CD 745i, giving you outboard iPod charging and playback along with an AM/FM radio and CD player with MP3 and WMA playback.

But what really makes it cost $400 is the sound, blasting or whispering from its 2.1 speaker configuration with a powered sub, giving it some serious rockability, especially for a clock radio. So what’s our beef, and what would we choose instead? Three other choices:
Even though Cambridge SoundWorks is not exactly the same outfit it was before its acquisition by Creative, we’ve been fans of the company’s clean-sounding gear, which has managed to survive the diddling of its mainstream corporate daddy.
But still, the 745i comes up way short; if it had Wi-Fi connectivity for Internet and home network listening, along with either XM or Sirius satellite radio connectivity, it would have our undivided attention. As it stands, there are too many other more retro-stylish (the Tivoli satellite system), great-sounding and more-capable (Roku SoundBridge Radio) and prettier (xtremeMac Luna) choices.
