The Amazon rain forest is full of enormous flora and fauna that are more than happy to kill you without blinking an eye. But compared to say, a giant centipede or a harpy eagle, the giant earthworm seems downright friendly. If the prospect of befriending a five foot worm is your cup of tea, that is.

Phil Torres from The Jungle Diaries stumbled across one of these giant creatures while driving through the Amazon during a rainstorm. He estimated it weighed about a pound, and measured over four feet long. Good lord! Torres goes on to explain that this rare worm is hunted by an equally rare giant amphibian—and to make matters worse, giant worms are pretty damn slow. There’s a reason why many of the giant worm species in the world are now extinct.
