Spotted at Cannes Film Festival: Carre Blanc, a moody, arty envisioning of a grim near future. The debut of writer-director Jean Baptiste Leonetti, the movie follows the life of Phillipe, first as a young man undergoing "rehabilitation" in the wake of a suicide attempt, then as a grown, respectable member of society. The folks at Twitch snagged three clips that offer a look at this dark, artsy film:
These don't give away too much of the plot, but they are a good glimpse at the tone and style of the film. The sets are so spare as to be surreal, and the atmosphere is a blend of Orwell and Kafka. This society clearly isn't a pleasant place to be, but the film seems to have a sense of dark, brutal humor about the whole business. It's definitely arthouse fare, but looks compelling.
