The movie being sold as “China’s first sci-fier” will get a high profile launch in the West — Chengdu, wo ai ni (which translates as “Chengdu, I Love You“) has been chosen to close this year’s Venice Film Festival.
Variety reports that the collaboration between director Fruit Chan and musician Cui Jian, which focuses on two parallel stories happening in 1976 and 2029 in the city of Chengdu, will be screened following the festival’s award ceremony on September 12th at the Palazzo del Cinema’s Sala Grande. Referred to by the festival as “the first science-fiction film from the People’s Republic of China,” the movie is said to feature a Matrix-like version of life, twenty years from now, that spins out of the plot centering around 1976’s earthquake in the Chinese city.
