About Granny

Granny is a first-person survival horror game developed by DVloper in which you wake up in a dark house with no memory of how you got there. A flashlight on a nearby table is the only source of light, and the front door is covered in locks. Your goal is to search the house, find keys and other objects to open the door, and escape before your five days run out. The catch: Granny hears everything. Drop an item on the floor, step on a creaky board, or knock something over, and she will sprint toward the sound.

Originally released as a mobile game, Granny became a viral hit on iOS and Android before arriving on Steam in November 2018. Its popularity grew through YouTube and streaming, where the jump scares and tense stealth gameplay made for entertaining viewing. Despite its relatively simple graphics, the game delivers genuine tension through audio design and unpredictable AI behavior. Granny listens, Granny hunts, and Granny does not forgive carelessness.

The house itself is the puzzle. Rooms, hallways, and hidden areas contain the items you need to unlock the front door or, alternatively, find the keys to an old car in the garage and drive out that way. Bear traps are scattered around the floor, and Granny's pets lurk in the darker corners. You can hide in wardrobes and coffins, but if she spots you climbing in, the hiding spot is useless. Two weapons can be found in the house; they will stop Granny temporarily, but she always gets back up.

Why Should I Download Granny?

The appeal comes from pure, distilled tension. There are no cutscenes or lengthy tutorials to sit through. You start in the dark, figure out the mechanics by doing, and quickly learn that every noise you make has consequences. Granny's AI is responsive enough that each playthrough feels unpredictable, even after you learn the layout. Items spawn in different locations between runs, which keeps the puzzle fresh.

Five difficulty settings give the game a wide skill range. Practice mode removes Granny entirely so you can explore the house and learn where things are. Easy and Normal offer manageable challenge levels. Hard and Extreme mode require precision and memorization, pushing even experienced players. You can also earn an extra day by completing a specific task for Granny.

Speedrunners and challenge players have kept the game alive well beyond its initial release. The house is compact enough that skilled players can escape in minutes, but new players often spend their full five days just learning the layout. Updates have added new areas, traps, and escape routes over time, including a Halloween update that introduced AI-generated 3D objects.

Is Granny Free?

Granny is free to download and play on iOS and Android. The mobile versions are ad-supported but do not require any payment to access the full game. On Steam, Granny is a paid title. There is no subscription, no in-app purchase requirement, and no separate paid DLC on any platform.

What Operating Systems Are Compatible with Granny?

On PC, Granny runs on Windows 7, 8, and 10 (64-bit) through Steam. It requires at least an Intel Core i5 750 processor, 4 GB of RAM, and DirectX 11 support. The recommended settings are modest, though the developer suggests playing on low quality with minimum-spec hardware.

The mobile versions are available on iOS through the App Store and on Android through the Google Play Store. These are the original versions of the game and remain free to download. There is no macOS, Linux, or console version.

What Are the Alternatives to Granny?

Dead by Daylight is an asymmetric multiplayer horror game where one player takes the role of a killer and four others play as survivors trying to escape. It offers a far larger scope than Granny, with a growing roster of original and licensed killers, dozens of maps, and deep online play. The tension of being hunted is similar, but Dead by Daylight focuses on team-based multiplayer rather than solo puzzle-solving. It suits players who want a competitive horror experience with long-term progression. You can download Dead by Daylight on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and mobile.

Resident Evil 7 Biohazard brings first-person survival horror into a detailed, story-driven setting. You explore a decaying plantation house in Louisiana while being stalked by the Baker family, solving puzzles and managing limited resources. The first-person perspective and house-escape structure share common ground with Granny, but Resident Evil 7 delivers a cinematic narrative, polished production values, and a significantly longer campaign. It is the better pick for players who want a full-length horror experience with AAA presentation. Resident Evil 7 Biohazard is available on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch.

Poppy Playtime puts you in an abandoned toy factory where you solve puzzles and avoid terrifying, oversized toys that stalk the halls. Like Granny, it builds horror around exploration and evasion rather than combat, and its episodic structure keeps each chapter focused. The visual style is more colorful and stylized, which gives it a different flavor of unease. Poppy Playtime works well for players who want puzzle-driven horror with a distinctive art direction. You can download it on PC through Steam, with console and mobile versions also available.
