About Beast of Reincarnation

Released on August 4, 2026, Beast of Reincarnation is an action-adventure game set in a devastated Japan. Developed by Game Freak, the studio best known for Pokémon, it is a dark epic in which a young woman and her imposing canine companion traverse ravaged lands while facing numerous enemies. When people think of Game Freak, Pikachu and his friends immediately come to mind. Although closely associated with Nintendo for over thirty years, this Japanese developer is nonetheless free to venture off the beaten path and explore new experiences. Beast of Reincarnation embodies this ambition and represents a significant departure from the lighthearted Pokémon series.

Beast of Reincarnation is an action-RPG with a decidedly dark, mature tone. More challenging than the games typically associated with Game Freak, it is set in a post-apocalyptic Japan. In the year 4026, Japan is nothing more than a devastated wasteland. Two millennia after a terrible catastrophe, the archipelago is ravaged by an organic plague known as corruption, which destroys everything it touches and disrupts the natural ecosystem. Fauna, flora, and the population—all are affected. It is in this world on the brink of ruin that Emma, an eighteen-year-old woman, struggles to survive alongside Koo, a large white dog. What sets Emma apart is her ability to seal away corruption and prevent it from spreading further. Thus begins Beast of Reincarnation.

As the developers at Game Freak explain, the duo forms the emotional core of the experience. Emma has an arsenal of weapons and a wide range of abilities at her disposal to combat the scourge. Koo, meanwhile, tracks down clues, sniffs out enemies, and unleashes powerful abilities to defeat his foes. To take on increasingly powerful opponents, players can use an inventory system that allows them to upgrade their equipment as they progress. Technically, Beast of Reincarnation isn't the most stable game out there, but it boasts beautiful landscapes, engaging set pieces, and an art direction that makes excellent use of Unreal Engine 5. Its diverse biomes also contribute to the game's visual appeal.

The excellence of the soundtrack deserves special mention. Game Freak makes an unusual choice by incorporating actual songs into the gameplay. Rather than relying solely on atmospheric soundscapes, the game opens with a lovely ballad. Players explore Japan in the year 4026 to the accompaniment of beautifully rendered vocal tracks. The atmosphere is somewhat reminiscent of NieR: Automata, and the contrast between Emma's and Koo's gameplay segments is particularly striking. Emma's themes blend seamlessly with traditional Japanese instruments such as the shamisen, shakuhachi, and koto, whereas Koo's music is more energetic and electronic, featuring distorted synths. The soundtrack is undoubtedly one of Beast of Reincarnation's greatest strengths. Even if the game isn't perfect, it offers a genuinely distinctive atmosphere.

Why Should I Download Beast of Reincarnation?

Beast of Reincarnation is a single-player, third-person action-RPG set in a semi-open world featuring various biomes to explore. The game follows Emma, a Sealer who fights the scourge using a saber and various abilities, and Koo, a large white dog who accompanies her on her adventures. Koo sniffs out clues, fights alongside Emma, and unleashes powerful abilities to combat corruption. Don't expect a multiplayer mode or online adventures: Beast of Reincarnation sticks to the classic single-player formula. The gameplay loop is fairly straightforward: you explore a devastated Japan, scouring ruins for resources, camps, characters, and fragments of history. Progression also involves numerous battles, ranging from relatively easy encounters to demanding boss fights, with everything from ordinary strays to formidable foes standing in your way.

To survive, you'll need to master the art of parrying enemy attacks. Parrying is central to the combat system and can make the difference between success and failure. A successful parry destabilizes your opponent, leaving them more vulnerable and sometimes temporarily defenseless. Well-timed actions also allow Koo to unleash Bloom Arts, powerful special techniques that deal devastating damage to enemies. The action slows down, giving players a moment to issue commands and select the right technique, with the timing and choice of ability helping to maximize the attack's effectiveness. Koo is essential to Emma's survival, but she's more than capable of holding her own when it comes to taking down dangerous foes.

In addition to her saber, designed for precise strikes, Emma possesses the powers of a Sealer. Her abilities allow her to fight the Scourge through a series of moves linked to—you guessed it—her hair. In this world dominated by plant life, her hair acts as an extension of the roots hidden underground. She can use it to cling to walls, reach dizzying heights by creating a platform beneath herself, strike enemies from a distance, immobilize them, and more. Emma can also benefit from Koo's passive abilities, including those that restore her health. As an action-RPG, the game features a skill tree that improves both characters' attributes, including strength, vitality, and flourishing. Beast of Reincarnation doesn't reinvent the genre, but it introduces an endearing duo and offers an interesting adventure to enjoy in mid-August, when the video game news cycle tends to quiet down.

What Are the Alternatives to Beast of Reincarnation?

Whether you enjoyed Emma and Koo's adventure or were put off by the reviews, three titles are worth checking out.

The first is Black Myth: Wukong. This hit from Chinese studio Game Science is a spectacular action-RPG inspired by Journey to the West, a classic of Chinese literature. You play as the Destined One, a monkey warrior and successor to Sun Wukong, as you journey through settings drawn from Asian mythology. Boss battles are undoubtedly the game's strongest suit, featuring impressive set pieces and an exceptionally inventive bestiary—particularly noteworthy given the criticism that Beast of Reincarnation lacks enemy variety. Transformations and spells add welcome tactical depth, while the staff can be wielded in three distinct stances. Technically, the game pushes Unreal Engine 5 to its limits and boasts stunning visuals. If you're looking for a more expansive and polished adventure, this is likely the best choice of the three.

The second is NieR: Automata. The comparison comes up in many reviews of Beast of Reincarnation, and for good reason. The PlatinumGames and Square Enix title is also set in a post-apocalyptic world abandoned by humanity, where combat androids battle machines amid the ruins of a forgotten civilization. You take control of 2B, 9S, and A2 in turn, with each playthrough revealing a different facet of the same story. You'll need to complete multiple playthroughs to grasp the full scope of the narrative. The gameplay alternates between fast-paced hack-and-slash combat, shooting sequences, and frequent shifts in perspective. Above all, however, it is the soundtrack, composed by Keiichi Okabe, that has left a lasting impression, with its vocals sung in a fictional language that haunt every area you explore.

The third is Okami, and the connection is more obvious than it might seem. In this 2006 classic from Clover Studio and Hideki Kamiya, you play as Amaterasu, the sun goddess reincarnated as a white wolf and tasked with cleansing a mythological Japan plagued by a curse. While Emma seals away corruption and manipulates the plant world, Amaterasu restores life to withered lands wherever she goes. Both games draw on the symbolism of nature and renewal, albeit in very different ways. The Celestial Brush, which lets you draw directly on the screen to defeat enemies or make the sun rise, remains one of the medium's most elegant innovations. The Japanese woodblock-print-inspired art style has aged remarkably well, and Japanese folklore is treated with great tenderness. With Clover's legacy living on and a sequel to Okami in development, there's already plenty of reason to look forward to what's next.
