About Spooky Express

Spooky Express is a puzzle game in which you lay tracks to guide creatures of the night to their destinations. Developed by Draknek & Friends, it invites you to take the controls of a train like no other, tasked with transporting vampires, zombies, and humans through more than 200 levels.

Draknek & Friends is the studio behind several acclaimed puzzle games, including Cosmic Express, A Good Snowman Is Hard To Build, and A Monster’s Expedition. In Spooky Express, you play as the conductor of the only train serving Trainsylvania, an imaginary country populated by creatures of the night. Each level takes the form of a small diorama featuring a departure station, stops to reach, and passengers waiting for their train.

The concept is simple: plot a route to deliver each passenger to the right destination. Vampires must reach their coffins, zombies their graves, while the humans who have snuck onto the train must be brought to safety before they end up on the menu. The game features over 200 levels spread across several worlds, from a pumpkin patch to a gloomy mansion and even a rather playful version of hell.

The visual style is colorful and cute, a far cry from traditional horror games. The soundtrack, composed by Priscilla Snow, complements the gameplay, while comic strips by David Hellman and Zac Gorman punctuate your progress. The game is available on PC and mobile, offering relaxing puzzle-solving sessions in a delightfully macabre atmosphere.

Why Should I Download Spooky Express?

Each puzzle takes place on a grid. You map out the train’s route one square at a time, connecting the station to the various stops. Two fundamental rules complicate the task: the train can carry only one passenger at a time, and the tracks cannot cross. You must therefore plan the order of the stops before laying the tracks, as one wrong choice can derail the entire journey.

New mechanics are introduced gradually. A new type of monster, an obstacle, or an additional rule expands the possibilities, and subsequent levels give you time to master each new element before putting it to the test. To keep the challenge from becoming too frustrating, the game offers a hint system that reveals part of the route when you get stuck. Some puzzles are optional, allowing you to skip them and come back later.

The difficulty increases gradually, in line with the studio’s other titles. The first puzzles can be solved quickly, but the levels soon become more challenging and require greater foresight. Even after reaching the main ending, there are still some tougher puzzles to discover.

Is Spooky Express Free?

Pricing depends on the platform. On mobile, the game is free to download and lets you experience the beginning of the adventure. A one-time in-app purchase then unlocks the full game. There are no ads or subscriptions.

On PC and Mac, the game is sold as a one-time purchase, with no free full version available. The price may vary depending on the store and current promotions, so it’s best to check the relevant page before purchasing. You pay once to access the content included with the game.

What Operating Systems Are Compatible with Spooky Express?

The game is available on Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS. You can purchase the PC and Mac versions on Steam. The mobile versions are available on the App Store and Google Play.

What Are the Alternatives to Spooky Express?

Several puzzle games share a similar concept with Spooky Express: mapping out routes, managing transportation, or organizing networks to solve increasingly challenging puzzles. If you enjoy planning paths and finding the right solution, these three games are worth checking out.

RGB Express, developed by Bad Crane, applies this routing concept to colorful delivery trucks. Your job is to guide each truck through a series of streets to pick up and deliver packages to the correct houses. The challenge lies in planning efficient routes without creating conflicts between vehicles or leaving any deliveries unfinished. As you progress, the levels become more complex, introducing new obstacles that require careful planning and logical thinking. Its simple presentation and increasingly demanding puzzles make it a great choice for fans of route-planning games, even if its setting is more understated than the spooky world of Spooky Express.

Teeny Tiny Trains, developed by Short Circuit, also focuses on railways. You lay tracks, switch junctions, and guide small trains between stations to get them where they need to go. The game combines classic railway puzzles with a colorful, toy-like aesthetic, making it approachable while still offering plenty of opportunities to exercise your problem-solving skills. As new mechanics are introduced, you must think ahead and adjust your tracks to complete each level. It’s a particularly good alternative if you enjoy the railway theme of Spooky Express but would prefer a setting centered on miniature trains rather than supernatural passengers.

Mini Metro, developed by Dinosaur Polo Club, takes a different approach, blending puzzle-solving with network management and strategy. You design subway lines to connect stations across a growing city, transporting passengers while making the best use of your limited resources. As the city expands and more passengers arrive, you must regularly rethink your network, add new lines, and optimize existing routes to keep the system running smoothly. Unlike the turn-based puzzles of Spooky Express, Mini Metro unfolds in real time, creating a more dynamic experience in which your decisions must adapt to changing demands. It’s an excellent option if you enjoy transportation puzzles but want a greater emphasis on planning, efficiency, and ongoing network management.
