About Gears of War: E-Day

“War has raged on the planet Sera for 79 years. Generations have fought and died to seize a powerful resource: Imulsion. Today, the war is finally over, and humanity is on the verge of peace. But beneath the surface, a deeper threat is emerging…”

The plot of Gears of War: E-Day begins exactly five hours before the Emergence, a cataclysmic event in which the Locusts—a hostile subterranean species—burst forth from the bowels of the planet Sera to exterminate humanity. It all begins with a prologue: deep inside a subway station, a worker, flashlight in hand and mask on his face, makes his way through the darkness of the tunnel. Following a seismic shock, the power went out, and one of the trains lost contact with its operator. A maintenance crew was quickly dispatched to the scene, but contact was lost. Only the signal from their transponder reveals their location. The man doesn't know it yet, but he will be the very last victim of the world as it once was. By recounting the events that gave rise to Gears of War, E-Day offers a more intimate look at the relationship between Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago through the lens of a raw and visceral adventure.

Three hours before the Emergence. The crowd has gathered at the Sanctuary of Heroes to celebrate the victory of the Coalition of United Governments (CGU) over the Union of Independent Republics (URI). As Colonel Elias Trench pays tribute to the fallen soldiers, Marcus and Dom look at a memorial engraved with the names of the victims. We learn that Carlos Santiago, Dom's brother, was killed in action and that this loss haunts the two survivors of a trio of friends who had become inseparable. At the stroke of midnight, the two friends, now free of their military uniforms, meet up at a bar in the city of Kalona, a major hub for the refining of Imulsion—a type of oil that has become the driving force of humanity. It's their last beer for a long, very long time.

With Gears of War: E-Day, The Coalition manages to capture with rare accuracy that moment when everything changes. In about forty minutes, the once-proud, majestic city is reduced to a heap of ruins, engulfed in fire and bloodshed. The Locusts have carried out their plan, leaving behind nothing but corpses, destruction, and desolation. Just as they're beginning to recover from the shock, Marcus and Dom find themselves on the front lines facing hordes of terrifyingly hostile and dangerous creatures. Despite their experience, they witness—along with all the bystanders—the sudden appearance of gaping fissures throughout the city. For nearly 80 years, humans have been killing one another for mercenary reasons, unaware that a fearsome predator lurked beneath their feet. For the soldiers, the unknown is overwhelming: the enemy follows no rules except that of extermination. Gears of War: E-Day brilliantly highlights this reality.

Why Should I Download Gears of War: E-Day?

In Gears of War: E-Day, Marcus and Dom aren't the jaded, heavy-footed, and hopeless soldiers from the early installments of the series. Young and spirited, they're agile and move with great vitality. This dynamism translates into third-person gameplay that retains the series' core elements (including the famous low-to-the-ground run) while breathing new life into the formula. Although they're hardened by the horrors of war, the duo doesn't exude the same raw power—though they're certainly no choirboys, far from it. For the first time in the series, the characters can jump over obstacles, climb ledges, or slide to avoid a threat. They can even lie completely flat on the ground to sneak through areas infested with enemy snipers (yes, the Locusts can talk and are intelligent). The environment offers more verticality than in previous installments, and the impact of Unreal Engine 5 is palpable at every level, starting with destructible environments (don't expect to hide behind a barricade for very long) and localized physical damage.

Other new features include a revamped weapon reload meter, the removal of stamina, and a few brand-new weapons, such as the “Gut-Ripper” grenade launcher (you can't make this stuff up) and the “Incinerator” shotgun. The Lanzor, meanwhile, appears in its original version—without a chainsaw, but with a bayonet. Don't worry—the chainsaw isn't missing from the game. As you progress, you'll also gain access to a four-slot module system to optimize your weapons. Nothing revolutionary, but it's always nicer to have a fully loaded magazine that doesn't jam. You'll find these modules mainly in the open areas featured in certain chapters: using the map, you can switch between the main objective, side missions, and collectibles. While not quite an open world, these areas provide a welcome break from a campaign that remains mostly linear.

With its stunning direction, breathtaking graphics, and incredible atmosphere, Gears of War: E-Day plunges players into a never-ending nightmare. Just minutes after the Emergence, Kalona begins to shake. The ground splits open, an entire building vanishes into a chasm as if swallowed by the earth, and panic grips the streets. Civilians flee, screaming, and try to barricade themselves behind doors that won't hold out for long. Others stand frozen, unable to comprehend what they're seeing. Disbelief gives way to horror: neon lights flicker, light bulbs shatter, and, in the gloom, the Locusts surge forth in droves. Parents should be aware that Gears of War: E-Day is not suitable for anyone under 18. The language is crude, blood splatters the walls, and the Locusts are so repulsive that Marcus and Dom respond with unbridled violence.

The game overwhelms us with both its hordes of creatures and a level of detail we never thought possible on a console like the Xbox Series. The level of detail is so high that you'll be amazed by how organic the visuals look. To achieve this level of quality, The Coalition leveraged several Unreal Engine 5 technologies: Lumen dynamic lighting, MegaLights—which allows for multiple light sources—and Nanite geometry. In short, get ready for a truly breathtaking visual experience.

The sound design is just as impressive. To create this end-of-the-world atmosphere, the developers at The Coalition enlisted composer Adam Lastiwka. The themes are heavy without being overpowering and highlight the various emotions the characters go through. Virtually powerless in the face of a phenomenon beyond their control, Marcus and Dom find themselves at the heart of a horrific, suffocating, and visceral closed-room scenario. This sensation remains intact from start to finish, thanks in large part to sound design that literally glues you to the couch. All around you is nothing but chaos and clatter. The French voice acting is excellent, making the adventure feel like a blockbuster movie. Gears of War: E-Day is an unexpected comeback that delivers a knockout punch we won't soon forget.

Is Gears of War: E-Day Free?

Gears of War: E-Day is a paid game. It's a blockbuster that took many years to develop and serves as the latest technological showcase for Microsoft's consoles. It is available in two versions: Standard and Premium.

The game is also included in Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Therefore, if you're a subscriber, you can download the game or play it via cloud gaming.

If you have a Windows PC, an Xbox Series console, an ROG Xbox Ally X, or a Steam Deck, this is definitely one of the year's must-play games if you're a fan of the genre.

What Operating Systems Are Compatible with Gears of War: E-Day?

Gears of War: E-Day is exclusive to Microsoft systems, namely Windows PC (Steam or Microsoft Store), Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X. To make the game run on the Xbox Series S, The Coalition used the console's SSD to compensate for the lack of RAM. Thanks to this ingenious trick, the game retrieves data from the SSD and loads it into RAM as needed. By leveraging this continuous transfer between the SSD and RAM, the developers were able to free up space and pull off a remarkable feat.

You can also download Gears of War: E-Day on the ROG Xbox Ally X, the portable console designed by Asus and Microsoft, or on the Steam Deck (the game scales its graphics to deliver a surprisingly impressive visual experience).

What Are the Alternatives to Gears of War: E-Day?

Gears of War: Reloaded lets you discover what becomes of Marcus and Dom once the horror of Emergence Day has passed. The two friends have changed a lot: gone are the days of panic; now they're hardened soldiers who've learned to live with the threat. Exfiltrated from prison, Marcus returns to duty with Delta Squad on a last-ditch mission against the Locusts. This is the saga's seminal installment—the one that popularized cover-based combat, Lancer duels, and that atmosphere where the characters seem hopeless. This remastered version gives it a serious facelift, with revamped graphics, a co-op campaign, and multiplayer that's as intense and visceral as ever. Playing through E-Day and then Reloaded really brings home just how far our two heroes have come.

With Gears 5, the series took an unexpected turn. The game features Kait Diaz, a young soldier haunted by visions that mysteriously connect her to the enemies she fights. To understand where she comes from, she leaves the battlefields to explore vast landscapes—mountains, dunes, and more—which she traverses aboard a strange glider-like vehicle. The heroine can count on Jack, a flying drone that does more than just open doors: he heals, protects, blinds enemies, and can even turn them against their allies. The shootouts stay true to the spirit of the series—intense and brutal. And once the story is over, Horde mode lets you fend off waves of Locusts with friends, while Escape mode challenges you to flee an enemy hive before it closes in on you. Solid!

There probably wouldn't have been a Gears of War without Resident Evil 4. Before Marcus took cover, Capcom had already revolutionized the action game by introducing an over-the-shoulder camera that became the symbol of an entire industry. In this survival horror classic, Agent Leon S. Kennedy travels to a Spanish village to find Ashley, the daughter of the U.S. president. There, he discovers villagers controlled by a parasite and a terrifying cult pulling the strings. With spectacular cinematography, iconic scenes, and memorable characters… it's a masterpiece. For E-Day fans, this is a chance to discover the game that influenced an entire generation of third-person shooters, including The Coalition's series. Its highly successful remake has modernized the adventure without losing any of its charm.
