About Cairn

Cairn puts you in the shoes of professional climber Aava as she attempts the first-ever ascent of Mount Kami, a fictional peak no one has reached. Developed by The Game Bakers, the studio behind Furi and Haven, it was released in January 2026 on PC and PlayStation 5 to strong reviews, sitting in the mid-80s on Metacritic with over 90% positive ratings on Steam.

The game centers on a realistic climbing simulation where you place each hand and foot individually, choose holds, adjust posture, and manage balance as you move up the rock face. There is no fixed path. You can climb on anything, which means route planning is a genuine skill rather than a scripted sequence. Weather shifts, stamina depletes, and gear runs out, so every decision carries weight.

Between climbs, you set up bivouac camps to cook meals, manage your backpack, and recover. A narrative runs through the journey: Aava encounters other characters on the mountain, reflects on what she is willing to sacrifice for the summit, and gradually reveals the history of Mount Kami. It is as much a story about obsession and cost as it is about reaching the top.

Why Should I Download Cairn?

Cairn does something few games attempt: it makes climbing feel physically real. You control Aava's limbs with simple inputs, but the physics respond to weight, grip strength, and balance in a way that creates genuine tension. Overreach for a distant hold, and you might lose your grip. Rush through a section without placing a piton, and you risk a deadly fall. The climbing works because it demands patience and planning, not fast reflexes.

The open route design is the other standout. Mount Kami is not a corridor. You pick your own climbing line up the face, weighing risk against reward at every junction. Shorter routes may be more dangerous, while longer detours might drain resources you need later. Pitons are limited, food runs out, and storms roll in unexpectedly, which forces constant recalculation.

Visually, the mountain is stunning. Environments range from sunlit lakes and misty ridgelines to harsh storms and vertical cliff faces. The soundtrack, composed in part by Martin Stig Andersen (known for Limbo and Inside), adds to the atmosphere without overwhelming the quiet moments. A first playthrough takes around 15 hours, with additional modes extending the experience further.

Is Cairn Free?

No. Cairn is a paid game. A standard edition and a deluxe edition are available. The deluxe edition includes a travel guide illustrated by comic artist Mathieu Bablet along with other extras. The game occasionally goes on sale through Steam and the PlayStation Store.

What Operating Systems Are Compatible with Cairn?

You can download Cairn on PC through Steam, the Epic Games Store, and GOG. On console, it is available on the PlayStation Store for PS5. A demo on the Nintendo Switch 2 has also been announced. The PC version requires Windows 10 at minimum, a 64-bit processor, and an SSD. Controller input is recommended. System requirements are modest enough for most mid-range PCs, and the game runs well on the Steam Deck according to community reports.

What Are the Alternatives to Cairn?

Subnautica drops you into an alien ocean world after a crash landing, where survival depends on scavenging resources, building underwater bases, and exploring increasingly deep and dangerous biomes. Like Cairn, it rewards careful resource management and punishes recklessness, though the setting and movement are entirely different. The sense of isolation and gradual discovery is similar, and the narrative unfolds through environmental storytelling rather than cutscenes. Players who enjoy Cairn's solitary, high-stakes exploration often find Subnautica scratches the same itch in a very different environment.

The Forest is a survival horror game set after a plane crash in a forest filled with hostile mutants. You gather materials, build shelters, and explore a massive cave system while piecing together a story about your missing son. It shares Cairn's emphasis on resource scarcity and environmental danger, though it leans harder into horror and combat. Co-op multiplayer adds another dimension. Players who want survival tension with a darker edge often download The Forest for its blend of building, exploration, and dread.

PEAK is a multiplayer climbing game that focuses on competitive and cooperative ascents. Where Cairn is a solo, narrative-driven experience, PEAK lets you race or collaborate with other climbers on challenging routes. The climbing mechanics are physics-based and demanding, rewarding precise movement and planning. It offers a different flavor of the same core idea: vertically oriented gameplay where every move counts. Players looking for climbing gameplay with a social or competitive element may want to download PEAK as a complement to Cairn's solitary journey.
