Interactive Moon Map Is The Next Best Thing To Piloting Your Own Lander

You may not be able to pilot your own personal spacecraft right into a crater on the Moon yet, but this complete interactive map from NASA of the moon’s north pole — the largest, most complete map of the area ever created — is pretty close.

Each pixel on the map is equivalent to six-and-a-half feet of lunar surface and it uses more than 10,000 snapshots of the moon in a mosaic to form a complete image of the moon’s northern pole.

Just for fun, here’s a shot of the lunar map superimposed onto a map of the United States. NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera team who made the map, says that the area covered is roughly equivalent to that of Texas and Alaska combined:
