Lebanon Assessing National BlackBerry Policy

Following the lead of neighbors Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, Lebanon’s government is reconsidering its own stance on BlackBerry devices amid regional privacy concerns. The Lebanese Telecoms Regulatory Authority is planning talks with RIM regarding its worries.

Lebanon is only the most recent country to vocalize its distrust of RIM’s encryption measures, which prevent prying governmental eyes from reading BlackBerry messages. “We are studying the issue from all sides—technical, service-wise, economic, financial, legal and security-wise,” explained Imad Hoballah, a chief regulatory official.
