There's Officially a 50-Inch 4K TV That's Cheaper Than Your TV

TCL just announced a new 50-inch Ultra HD LED television for $1000. Holy wow, that is freaking cheap. Just a few months ago, we were blown away by Seiki's 50-inch 4K that cost $1500. How the hell are they making all of these beautiful, high-resolution panels so cheap?

The new edge-lit 50-incher is cheap in part because it doesn't come loaded with tons of branded certifications from THX (like Sharp's TVs do) or any of the smart connected TV features offered by the more expensive models from LG and Samsung.

Mercifully, the TCL display does have a built-in upscaler that will take your HD content and boost it up to 4K resolution. No word on what upscaler in particular they're using (we're guessing it's third-party tech), but that's definitely the kind of thing we're going to want to see in action before making any real determinations about this television.

What we do know is that this thing is listed at a fire-sale price—and if the aforementioned Seiki is any indication, this $1000 red tag isn't as low as we're gonna go. Despite the Seik's $1500 MSRP, you can scoop one up on Amazon for around $1100 these days. That means this TCL TV could easily come in at $700-800 when it's marked down. Wow. The TCL 50-inch 4K will hit the US market in September. [TCL USA]

If there's a good high quality TV manufacturer out there like Panasonic etc that's listening...

I've seen cheap HD TV's that can't make a good looking picture unless it's a still image. Sure the resolution may be 4K but the processor may not be strong enough to render a good looking image without pixelation, judder, and poor color saturation.

I am all for not having all the smart TV bullshit. I NEVER use it.

I don't need apps built into my TV. I have Apple TV.
I don't even need internal speakers I'll never use.
I don't need a TV that connects to my phone that connects to my lawn mower, my weed trimmer, my bbq grill, my dog's collar, my garage door opener, my coffee maker etc and allows me to control all of those devices.
I don't care about 3D (haven't watched a thing in 3D in over a year)

Soooo what I'm saying is strip all that crap out and give me a gorgeous picture without all the extra bullshit and I'll buy 3 this weekend.

Until then I won't jump to 4K.
