This font, called Phone Streak, might not be the most practical typeface in the world, but it was probably the most fun to create—because it was put together by capturing long exposures of an iPhone being swept through the air.
Created by Marcus Byrne—a motion graphics designer—the font was created using a technique known as light painting. On a dark night, he used three- and four-second exposures captured using a Canon 5D DSLR to create each character, as he waved his phone through the air as a light source. The font, which is freely available, is a little ragged but utterly striking. Byrne explained to WIRED some of the issues he faced:
“When vertical and horizontal strokes cross each other, that’s when it got tricky. I played around with some techniques to hide the iPhone for a split second after a stroke and then move it into position before making the next stroke.”
