Today at Maker Faire 2008, MacGyver creator (and real life inspiration) Lee David Zlotoff announced he has a big budget MacGyver movie in the planning stages.
Zlotoff mentioned he somehow ended up with the movie rights years ago (extremely uncommon), giving him full control over the film. While few specifics were mentioned, and no formal announcement has been made, its extremely promising that the man with the power to make the film is getting the ball rolling. The question is...do you bring back Richard Dean Anderson as old MacGyver, or bring in a younger, Christian Bale-type to reprise the role of makeshift gadget god? [Maker Faire on Giz]
UPDATE: We asked Zlotoff if a Swiss Army Knife is still good enough for MacGyver today, check out his answer here.

I vote Richard Dean Anderson or bust. The guy's 58, but I can't imagine anyone else playing that role
Here is a paper clip and a iPhone, figure out how to put a sim card in it. That alone makes me feel like McGyver. . .
as long as he has a mullet, i dont care
Richard Dean Anderson, hands down.
You should be ashamed for even SUGGESTING they use another actor. You're lucky MacGyver teaches us not to use guns or else you'd be in BIG trouble ;-)
I agree, anyone other than Richard would be like having somoe replace Harrison Ford as Indy.
You obviously haven't heard of one Neil Patrick Harris. NPR was born to play Mac. [www.paunchstevenson.com]
@russdogg:I second the NPH vote, with a mentor-type cameo from Richard Dean Anderson. It has to be 'Wherever God takes me' NPH from Harold and Kumar thought, not the NPH from Doogie.
But who's gonna play mac's mullet?
I see it now: MacGyver vs. Chuck Norris. A little BenGay goes a long way.
If Harrison Ford can come back for another Indy movie, surely RDA could do a Macgyver flick.
@discounteggroll: I second that! I hope someone with some sway is reading this.
I bet MacGyver is the owner of Psystar...
No one can touch Richard Dean Anderson. Stargate fell apart with him and MccGyver would completely fail without him.
I haven't been as excited for a movie in a while. I vote Richard Dean Anderson. And no younger sidekick like in Live Free Or Die Hard and The new Indiana Jones.
He really liked his little stiny on The Simpsons, so I say WHY NOT. Better than that McGrueber skit on SNL.
If they do not get RDA, I will not be going to the movies for this film, but I will download it.
RDA FTW! I mean, it's been a loooooong time since I saw an episode of MacGyver (and yes, I caught them first hand, not re-runs), but he wasn't the actiony sort anyway. He was the action-brainsort. And, he did a hell of a job on StarGate. He carried that.
krizoitz:
MacGuyver taught us not to use guns throughout the lifetime of the series b/c of his experience as a child where a friend died from a horrible accident while Mac was horsing around with his 2nd Amendment rights BUT...
If you remember the Pilot episode of MacGuyver, Ol' Angus MacG had no problems busting out his AK and blasting away at all the terrorists. I guess he "forgot" about his anti-gun creedo for that first episode.
But mark me down for a "bring back Richard Dean Anderson" guy.
bring a new guy, but don't forget the mullets
I for one vote for Gary Coleman, switch it up a bit.
I squealed.
If this movie gets made, that can only mean that Patty and Selma Bouvier, Marge's chain-smoking twin sisters on the Simpsons, now wield more power in Hollywood than Michael Eisner, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and Steven Spielberg all rolled into one.
They should work in at least one or two actors from Stargate just to get a little cross-over interest from the younger dorks. Make it Amanda Tapping. Have RDA bring his mullet, and Tapping bring her gunt.
@russdogg: Neil Patrick Harris??? Not even. Far too smug. Knowing that blockbuster movie execs work primarily on the basis of the numbers and maximizing dollars, I would also think they wouldn't want an openly gay man as the lead in a role as "hetero" as MacGuyver. Trying to sell that idea to Billy Bob in corn-fed America exposes the venture to far too much risk. Keifer Sutherland would make a good MacGuyver.
They cast a kid named Nicholas Matus as MacGyver's son in the very last episode. He'd probably fit the bill if he's still around.
RDA! RDA! RDA!
I think my pants just got a wee bit wet hearing this.
@russdogg: @Gann: I think NPH for a young Mac, and we show again some of the reasons he doesn't like certain things, or we he picked up certain traits. @krizoitz: Then we fast forward to the present Mac. It work for the Last Crusade. Except for Pete Dalton, everyone is still around, right? Get Wenger(not Victorinox, b/c their scissors are crap) to make a special Mac edition Swiss Army Knife(I'll buy one), and you have a hit for a lot of people.
Comment on Holy Crap: MacGyver Blockbuster Film Coming! The best MacGyver adaptation ever... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSfiyI-qsw4
The way I see it, if Harrison Ford can still play Indiana Jones.. there is only 1 choice for MacGyver - RDA.
PS.... Nick Matus is gone gone...
I second Neil Patrick Harris.
RDA > NPH
i have seen reruns of macgyver and there is no replacing RDA with anybody else, especially NPH
I vote Samuel L Jackson.
check out "macgyver: the college years" series on youtube. stuff's pretty funny. the kid that plays him is good too, even though his mullet looks like a dead rat...and what about murdoch?
RDA can head the Phoenix Foundation if he doesn't want to do field work anymore. But hell yes, he'd better be in it.
What about having Jared Padalecki (Supernatural) playing MacGyver ? He is Richard Dean Anderson's nephew btw :)
Um . . . I'd hardly say this rises to the level of, "Holy Crap." Lee David Zlotoff is a writer who hardly writes. In the last 10 years he's written two episodes for third-rate TV shows nobody's heard of. That's it. He's written exactly one movie for the big screen in his entire career (The Spitfire Grill, more than 10 years ago), and he's never produced a single movie.
There's a ginormous difference between Lee David Zlotoff planning a blockbuster movie, and a blockbuster movie actually coming.
Yes they should have him in it, he's the original. Oh the gadgets! Why don't you mark stories like this as "sit on garbage bag" so those of us who pee themselves over news like this will have advance warning? Oh Gizmodo why does't thou vex us with such peeworthy stories and no warning!
RDA for sure. And wasn't that brunette chick from Desperate Housewives a frequent guest star / comic relief / love interest? She'll do still, obviously.
Richard Dean Anderson!!!
Anderson does deserve it
If they used any one but RDA it wouldn't be Macgyver... It'd be like having Shia LeBouf play Indiana Jones rather than Harrison Ford. Would any true Macgyver fan pay to see anyone else in the lead role? RDA is an institution and yes, I am aware that posting this makes me lame. But this is one thing I'm willing to be a loser over.
Definitely Richard Dean Anderson! grew up watching MacGyver - ran into RDA in the LA airport once - he was so much like the MacGyver character.
RDA may not be older than usual top billing long career actors, but time has not been too kind to him. Current trend of old farts doing action movies where they get love interests one third their age is getting seriously old. Time to start replacing male actors with younger versions. Imagine if they had remade Bourne Identity with Richard Chamberlain who was the original Bourne.
I hope they do a passing the torch type of thing with RDA retiring from Phoenix and mentoring a replacement. BTW, new Mac could just as well be a woman. That worked well in DarkAngel, Xena and TombRaider, whereas new male macgyver like character John Doe already failed.
the stargate films finished, what else does he have to do! come on RDA!!!
RDA = see in theatre
NPH = download torrent
Trivia:
I have been called "MacGyver" more times than I can count.
(I tend to be handy, creative and resourceful, though I draw the line at the hair style.)
To date I have never seen an episode of that program.
RDA! RDA! RDA! RDA!
i cant wait to fashion my movie ticket out of a cue tip some 3m spray adhesive and a swiss army knife
a macgyver movie without RDA playing the title role will be a mistake of epic proportions.
They should make Scott Bakula do it, than have Richard Dean play Al in the Quantum leap movie. Dean Stockwell gets the roll of Pete. Mac's Boss, and Murdock is cast for the Rock.
