What can hover in mid-air, land on air or water, carry 50 survivors, have a thousand-mile range, hit 345 mph, and even put out fires? The winner of a NASA contest for college-student engineers.
Ten students from Virginia Tech won the NASA Aeronautics Amphibious Tilt Rotor for Civilian Operations Competition — a mouthful of a contest sponsored by NASA’s Aeronautics Mission Directorate that fielded entries from more than 100 college students from all over the world.
And the winners are:
1st place: V.T.R.A.F.T. Concept, Virginia Polytechnic Institute
2nd place: CAESAR Concept, Georgia Institute of Technology and University of Liverpool
3rd place: AVATR Soterion Concept, University of Virginia
Honorable mention: Geryon concept, Ohio State University
