For last week’s solar eclipse, astronomer Glenn Schneider chartered a plane to fly through the vast shroud of darkness temporarily cast by the the moon’s shadow on the north Atlantic. Astrophotographer Stephan Heinsius was aboard the flight, with a video camera. Here’s what he and the other passengers saw.

Also aboard the flight was Geoff Sims, an astronomer and astrophotographer currently crowdfunding a documentary called Chasing Shadows. Bad Astronomer Phil Plait has some photos that Sims captured on the flight, and adds that the documentary “looks like it will be jaw-dropping.” Judging from Heinsius’ footage, Plait’s expectations are right where they should be.
