Another video game adaptation announcement has hit the press, this time for one Lollipop Chainsaw.
Originally released in 2012, the hack-and-slash game put players in the shoes of high schooler (and secret zombie hunter) Juliet Starling. When a zombie outbreak hits town, Jules grabs a chainsaw and gets to slicing up the undead, joined by the talking decapitated head of her boyfriend Nick. A mixed reception didn’t stop it from being a solid seller and cult classic, helped by the pedigree of developer Grasshopper and co-director Suda51 and co-writer James Gunn.
Per Deadline, Dragami Games, which worked on the 2024 remake, licensed out Lollipop Chainsaw for a movie set before the events of the original game. No surprises for guessing that the hope is for this to be an R-rated action-comedy, with Dragami president Shohei Sato calling this “another important step” for the franchise. Said film, according to Robert Franke, who’s involved with the production, will feel true to the game while standing on its own.
Those hoping for Suda51 or Gunn to be involved may be left wanting, as there’s no mention of either from Dragami in Deadline’s writeup. Whenever (and if) the film comes, it’ll be preceded by an anime adaptation of the first game set to come out presumably before the recently announced sequel in 2027. How the movie feeds into the larger franchise beyond a prequel, we’ll just have to wait and see.
