According to reports on WPCentral, Microsoft is allowing members of the public to wander into official stores and pre-order its new Surface tablet.

One forum member on WPCentral reports having successfully pre-ordered a tablet from a Microsoft pop-up shop in Oregon. He was given this piece of paper(!), which claims to be a “Surface reservation pass”, telling him to return to the store before 12pm on October 26th to pick up his new hardware. The report confirms others have received the passes, too.

It’s not clear how widespread the scheme is, but it might be worth a shot if you’re desperate for a Surface fix: with the $500 32GB Surface currently sold-out online, it might be the only way you can get your hands on one come the 26th. [WPCentral via Verge]
