Lego released just one set last year to tie into the arrival of Fantastic Four: First Steps, and while there were definitely still highlights, we’re still a bit haunted by those brick-built ‘elongated’ leg stilts for minifigure Reed Richards. So there’s good news in that Lego is finally making a second First Steps set with no minifigure nightmares in sight: just one very cute robot.
Seemingly out of nowhere, considering we’re almost coming up on a year since First Steps hit theaters, Lego has announced a second set in the Marvel subline in the form of a brick-built Herbie. Clocking in at around 9 inches tall when built, the 747-piece set lets you build an articulated model of the Fantastic Four’s adorable robot assistance as he appears in the film. Herbie can tilt and rotate his head (and of course, you can make his tape “eyes” spin, to boot), and has poseable arms that can hold his two included accessories, a brick-built screwdriver and cup of coffee.
It’s a very cute set, in the vein of the Lego Star Wars series of buildable droids (fitting for Lego Marvel to take some inspiration, after Star Wars modeled its new range of busts on Marvel’s spin!), and really, it does exactly everything it needs to. It would’ve been nice, perhaps, if there was a minifig-scaled Herbie to go with the rest of the team if you had the first set, but maybe sculpting an entire unique minifigure of him, or trying to condense a brick-built figurine of him down to that scale, would’ve been infeasible, so it’s good that the set just focuses on giving you the best-looking Herbie it can without going too overboard on price and size.
Plus, he’s not that much shorter than the buildable Galactus from the other First Steps set, so your dreams of watching Herbie show down with the devourer of worlds could soon be a reality. The Lego First Steps Herbie is available to preorder now and will release on August 1 for $75.
