Netflix has lately cornered the market on stories set in retirement communities, thanks to season one of Ted Danson’s private eye comedy Man on the Inside and the Helen Mirren-starring mystery Thursday Murder Club. Horror is the streamer’s next target in new series The Boroughs, and with the Duffer Brothers (who just flexed their executive-producing talents with Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen) bringing some of that Stranger Things darkness and a ridiculously great cast of actors we still can’t quite believe qualify as senior citizens, it looks like another delight.
Check out the latest trailer for The Boroughs, which fills in a lot more story hints beyond that first teaser.
“In the sun-drenched expanse of the New Mexico desert lies the Boroughs, a picturesque retirement community promising its residents the time of their lives,” reads Netflix’s official description. “But for new arrival Sam Cooper (Alfred Molina), paradise feels more like a prison. Everything changes when a terrifying nighttime encounter reveals that something monstrous is stalking the manicured cul-de-sacs. Dismissed by the powers that be as just another confused old man, Sam finds unlikely allies in a band of neighborhood misfits: a sharp-witted former journalist, a spiritual seeker, a cynical music manager, and a brilliant doctor running out of options. Overlooked and underestimated, these unlikely heroes must band together to unravel the dark truth at the heart of the Boroughs before their time runs out.”
A little bit of Cocoon, a little bit of The ‘Burbs, a healthy dose of Stranger Things, and even some Thursday Murder Club and Man on the Inside thrown in for good measure—yes, please. And your eyes did not deceive you with that cast: along with Molina, The Boroughs stars Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Denis O’Hare, Clarke Peters, and Bill Pullman.
The Boroughs hails from creators, showrunners, and executive producers Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews (The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance), with the Duffer Brothers also executive producing. The series premieres May 21 on Netflix.
