Myst is a puzzle adventure game where you explore an island and many different artefacts and machinery found on it to learn more about your predecessors. You can play Myst on PCs, gaming consoles, VR headsets, and mobile phones.

About Myst

Myst is a rework of a 1993 game that is now using the Unreal Engine to offer a more modern experience. You start the game by landing on an island, and every location you explore has a mechanical riddle. Solving it unlocks a new world that is linked together by secret books and notebooks that bring more clarity to the narrative as you find them. The worlds are called "Ages" and have their own climate, soundtrack, theme, unique puzzles, and visuals.

While the game doesn't include combat, dialogues, or enemies, your task is to engage with the different environmental mechanics to uncover the storyline, part by part. Myst has a rather minimalistic approach to gameplay and design, so you go through the world and piece together scraps of information from journals, visual cues, and patient observation of the world around you.

Even though this edition has been reworked for modern platforms, it keeps the mood and structure of the original game. You can choose from several difficulty levels and even play the game in VR. Each time you play the game, the puzzles change, so the experience remains fresh, and you can download Myst on various platforms, like iOS, macOS, Windows, VR headsets, or Xbox consoles.

Why should I download Myst?

For those who enjoy puzzle games with expansive game maps, Myst will be an excellent option. It remains one of the most brilliant games in this genre. Although the game has been remade for modern devices, it still focuses on exploration, atmosphere, and logical challenges.

The game's core mechanic is based around discovery, as the island is filled with linked Ages that challenge you with various puzzles connected with the environment. As you play Myst, you get to figure out how the ancient machines you find work, interpret cues left by the island's previous inhabitants, and learn how each of the Ages you unlock works.

In order to solve all the various puzzles the game presents you with, you need to use logical thinking, spatial awareness, pattern recognition, and your memory, as the quizzes are often linked together or can influence an element in a faraway location.

As such, in Myst, you can explore the map as you wish; there are no guidelines as to where to start your exploration, and you get to decide on your own. Because of that, the game has an open-ended format where you can explore every part of the island environment and progress at a pace and order that suits you. If you're lost in the game, you can also turn on optional hints that can assist you when solving puzzles, without making the solution too obvious. Depending on your choices and exploration, you can have a different ending so that you can replay Myst multiple times.

Myst keeps its original feeling of wonder and discovery while being updated to 3D graphics with new renderings of the island, its terrain, and architecture. The remake offers a dynamic weather system and real-time lighting, while also providing players with modern control schemes and support for various controllers.

The game now also offers full support for VR, so you can play it on Oculus Rift, Quest (via Link), HTC Vive, and Valve Index and get an even more immersive gameplay and experience. With this option, you can learn to examine an object or move different game elements with your hands, making the game more active and tactile.

Many players also appreciate Myst's soundtrack and visual cues that adjust to your location and add an emotional layer to the gameplay. The game works on a variety of devices, and you can buy it for Windows and macOS computers, Xbox gaming consoles, iOS phones and tablets, and a number of different VR headsets.

Is Myst free?

No, Myst is not a free game, so in order to play it, you first need to purchase it from a marketplace of your choice.

Depending on the platform you'll be using to play Myst on, you can buy the game on Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store, Xbox marketplace (with support for Xbox Game Pass), Oculus Store, Steam VT, or even App Store for macOS and iOS.

What operating systems are compatible with Myst?

You can download Myst and play it on a variety of platforms, including computers with Windows 10 and 11 or macOS 14.50 or higher, phones with iOS 14.0 or up, Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One, but also on Oculus Quest, Rift, HTC Vive, Valve Index, and other SteamVR headsets.

Please note, though, that the game doesn't sync your progress between platforms, so it always remains local to your device.

What are the alternatives to Myst?
