How to Unblock xHamster in 2026: Steps That Work

Disclaimer: This page is written for adults. Gizmodo supports efforts to keep explicit material away from minors. Explicit material is restricted to adults in the US, the UK and most other countries, and where adult content is illegal at any age, local law applies. Our interest is the privacy of legal adults, whose identity documents now pass through third-party companies with their own breach history.

You click on xHamster and, instead of the homepage, you see a sign-up window, a request to prove your age, or a page that won’t load. Your browser isn’t the problem. Many US states, the UK and several other countries now require adult sites to check visitors’ ages, and some countries block the site completely.

What xHamster shows you depends on where your connection appears to come from. A VPN changes that location, so you can unblock xHamster from almost any country.

Why Isn’t xHamster Working?

What you see depends on your location:

• 27 US states: laws require adult sites to verify ages, so xHamster requires an account and an age check first
• The UK: the Online Safety Act has required age checks on adult sites since July 2025
• France and Australia: age checks for adult sites began in France in 2025 and in Australia in 2026
• India, Indonesia, Turkey, Pakistan and the UAE: local ISPs block many adult sites

xHamster cut off Texas in March 2024 after the state sued it. It settled in November 2025, paid $120,000 and added age verification.

The same Texas law also covers SpankBang and other tube sites. Other adult sites took different approaches to the same laws:

• Pornhub blocks most of these states completely
• In Nebraska, Pornhub and its sister sites are blocked
• In Louisiana, Pornhub checks ages through the state’s digital ID app
• Chaturbate and other cam sites run age checks in many of the same states

A workplace network can also block xHamster, even where no such law applies.

How to Unblock xHamster With a VPN

Connect to a VPN server in a city like New York or Los Angeles, or in Canada, and xHamster plays normally. A VPN encrypts your connection and replaces your IP address with the server’s, so xHamster sees the server’s location instead of yours.

xHamster doesn’t block VPN connections, and every VPN we tried worked on servers in those locations. In the NordVPN app, open the location list, search for Canada or New York, and connect.

If xHamster Doesn’t Work After You Connect

Your browser may still remember your earlier location. Open a private window, or clear xHamster’s cookies, then reload the site. Next, check that the VPN changed your IP address to the right state or country on an IP lookup site. If nothing changes, switch to another server in the same city.

Can You Use xHamster Without a VPN?

Yes, in most places, by verifying your age. It’s the only reliable option without a VPN, though it means handing personal data to a third party.

Verify Your Age With an xHamster Account

In places with age-check laws, xHamster requires visitors to create an account or log in, then verify their age once. Depending on the location, the check uses an ID scan, a face scan that estimates age, or a digital ID app. These checks pass through outside companies, and some have leaked ID data.

In 2025, a support vendor working for Discord exposed about 70,000 government ID photos submitted for age checks. The Tea app also exposed thousands of verification selfies and ID photos that year. Many adults prefer to keep that data to themselves.

Separately, a privacy-focused VPN hides their browsing from their internet provider.

Other Options and Their Risks

The other options are unreliable or risky:

• Free web proxies send only the browser’s traffic through another server, with no encryption, and video often fails to play. When we tried Hide.me’s free web proxy, xHamster returned an error. Here’s the difference between a proxy and a VPN.
• Tor Browser changes your IP address too, but you can’t choose the country, and videos are very slow to start. It’s built for privacy and dark web access.
• Copycat domains and pages such as getxhamster aren’t run by xHamster. Some are video downloaders or clones that spread malware.
• Free VPNs cap data or pick the server for you, and lesser-known ones often sell browsing data. Paid porn VPNs avoid those limits.

Which VPN to Use for xHamster

Since xHamster doesn’t detect VPNs, we judged these three on speed and privacy, testing each on US servers. Our xHamster VPN ranking covers more options.

VPN	US download speed	Standout privacy feature
NordVPN	181.50 Mbps	App kill switch
Proton VPN	173.68 Mbps	Secure Core
ExpressVPN	177.03 Mbps	KPMG-audited no-log policy

NordVPN: Best VPN for xHamster

NordVPN gave us the best US speeds, far more than xHamster’s top video quality requires. NordVPN has servers in 152 countries, including Canada and several US cities. Its kill switch blocked all traffic during a PC restart until the VPN reconnected.

NordVPN also has an app kill switch, which closes chosen apps, such as your browser, if the connection drops. The app has many settings and can feel busy at first. For xHamster, though, the search field and the quick-connect button are enough. The two-year Basic plan costs about $3.50 a month, and our full NordVPN review covers the rest.

Proton VPN: Best for Audited Privacy

Proton VPN’s US server was fast enough for xHamster’s top video quality with VPN Accelerator on. The feature made the same server a little faster in our tests, so leave it enabled. Privacy is Proton VPN’s main strength. It’s based in Switzerland, its apps are open source, and Securitum has audited its no-log policy five years running, most recently in May 2026.

For an extra layer, Secure Core passes traffic through a second server in a privacy-friendly country first. That costs some speed, so enable it only when you want the added protection. Proton VPN Plus is about $3 a month if paid for two years.

ExpressVPN: Best for Beginners

ExpressVPN’s US server came close to NordVPN’s speed. The app is very simple: one button connects you, and there’s little else to configure. Its no-log policy has passed KPMG audits, and the company operates under British Virgin Islands law.

The Basic plan’s Lite Protection blocks ads and malicious sites but leaves trackers alone, so add a browser tracker blocker or choose the Advanced plan. The Basic plan is about $3 a month over two years, and our ExpressVPN review has the full details.

Conclusion

xHamster hasn’t disappeared. Where age-check laws apply, it shows a sign-up window or a verification step, and a few countries block it through local ISPs. A New York or Canadian server brings back the regular site in a couple of minutes. To regain full access, we recommend NordVPN, one of the top-rated VPNs we’ve tested, for its speed and privacy tools.
