For four full days, we soaked in the crazy, creative awesomeness that was Comic-Con over the weekend, basking in the glow of cinematic pyrotechnics, mind-grabbing stories, and breathtaking art. Here’s the very best of what we saw.

First, the view from 40 miles up. Here are our picks for the winners and losers of the Con, as well as a hyper-detailed survey we did of the best items for sale on the floor.

Movie Madness

Comic-Con is all about getting a sneak peek at stuff you’re dying to know more about, and this year didn’t disappoint. Surrounded by fans seething with excitement, we got a first look at Ridley Scott’s much-debated Alien prequel, Prometheus, and it blew our facemasks right off with its awesomeness. We also got amped for In Time, the latest dystopian thriller from Gattaca director Andrew Niccol, starring Justin Timberlake. Plus, Hellboy director Guillermo Del Toro spilled a lot about his latest projects — which sound amazing — and Robert Rodriguez told us that he wants to film a Machete sequel set in space! Our hearts were warmed by the stars of the Spider-Man reboot, but we were a little underwhelmed by news about who Spider-Man’s nemesis will be.

We got a zany look at Flight of the Conchords’ Jemaine Clement hamming it up in Men in Black 3, and Doctor Who’s David Tennant chewing the scenery in the remake of Fright Night. But nothing could really beat the burning vision of Ghost Rider peeing fire from his glitter pants in the sequel from the maniacal directors of Crank. When you’re done mulling that one over, consider the idea of a world that contains both a Logan’s Run reboot, and a remake of Total Recall. Yes, that is our world.

All our questions about Twilight were answered. First, what’s up with the sex? And second, why is brilliant director Bill Condon (Kinsey, Dream Girls) helming these two guilty pleasure flicks?

We saw Cowboys & Aliens, and our first impression was that it was basically awesome, and emotionally involving. We also talked to star Daniel Craig about his blaster, and got the scoop from director Jon Favreau about how to recreate the nineteenth century.

Did you know that John Cusack would be playing Edgar Allen Poe, detective, in upcoming movie The Raven? Now you have something creepy to look forward to. Or, if you’d rather see scantily-clad Greek gods doing their thing, maybe you’d like to check out The Immortals. We did.

Weird and Awesome

Everybody was jumping up and down with glee over The Knights of Badassdom, featuring fan favorites Peter Dinklage and Summer Glau in a comedy about LARPing. And seriously, how can you resist a musical documentary from William Shatner about all the people who have played captains in the Star Trek franchise?

Triumphant Television

We caught glimpses and pilots for a lot of new TV series coming this fall and spring. We loved reality-bending cop show Awake, were riveted by the cinema verité story of magic and missing persons along the Amazon in Paranormal Activity director Oren Peli’s series The River, and vowed to tune in for JJ Abrams’ latest series about surveillance paranoia and secret heroes, Person of Interest. Plus, we saw the first hour of Steven Spielberg’s time-travel series Terra Nova, about humans rebuilding civilization during the age of the dinosaurs.

Like everybody at Con, we went completely bonkers over Doctor Who and Torchwood. The Doctor himself, Matt Smith, told us about Doctor Who’s 50th birthday bash. We got the scoop on what to expect in season 7 of Doctor Who, and we saw teasers for Doctor Who, plus a new Torchwood trailer. We also talked to John Barrowman, who plays Torchwood’s Captain Jack. And then there was the Doctor Who cosplay.

And we smashed our heads into our hands when we saw the pilot of Locke & Key, the supernatural detective series based on a comic penned by Joe Hill — because it was so awesome, and the networks failed to pick it up.

Star Trek is crossing over with the Legion of Superheroes, and apparently there will be much discussion of ears. Vaughan thrilled us with the news that he’s penning a monthly scifi comic called Saga.
