The Alters is a sci-fi game that blends survival, adventure, and base-building into one experience. You play as a survivor who's trying to escape a hostile planet and create alternate versions of your characters. Available on Windows and gaming consoles.

About The Alters

The Alters is a single-player game with a choice-driven storyline that centers around Jan Dolski. This blue-collar worker is the only survivor of a failed space mission that caused him to end up on a desolate alien planet. This title masterfully blends various mechanics like survival, base-building, and exploration with science-fiction themes to deliver unique gameplay.

Your main character in The Alters has to fabricate multiple versions of himself that are called Alters. This helps him operate all the various machinery in his base, but also allows him to survive on the planet. The Alters are not just duplicates, but each of them is a projection of how Jan's life could be different and the different decisions he could've made. Each of the copies has unique skills and personality traits that differentiate them from each other and cause them to behave and react differently.

As you gather resources, explore the plant, and find rare materials, you also need to solve interpersonal conflicts that arise between the Alters. It's a complex game with a lot of emotional and psychological depth, making The Alters more than just another sci-fi single-player survival game. You can buy it through Steam for Windows 10 and 11 computers or PlayStation and Xbox consoles.

Why should I download The Alters?

What makes The Alters stand out from other survival games is the surprising core mechanic where you don't actually have a lot of different characters in the game, but various versions of yourself that help you manage and gather resources, but also cause challenges. This aspect drives the title's entire gameplay and storyline, the pressing question of "what if?", and then seeing it materialized in a new copy of the main character.

In order to create Alters, you need to gather Rapidium, a mysterious substance from the planet you ended on. Then, each alternate version is brought from various key decision points in Jan's life, like his choosing to go to a university or join a mining crew. Alternating these decisions can result in a new character that is a highly skilled scientist or a great engineer. Because of that, the gameplay forces you to think strategically about your choices and what will actually help you survive, expand the base, craft tools, and face different environmental hazards.

Even though you could think you're just creating copies, each of the Alters has its own set of memories, regrets, and emotional baggage that comprise a large portion of the gameplay and storyline. There are a lot of psychological levels to these creations where they can clash with themselves or regret being created, and it's the original Jan's job to take care of that and navigate those situations. You can do it through dialogue and extensive choice-based interactions that can help with morale or destroy it.

Apart from that, The Alters has a thorough survival system and base-building mechanics where you're charged with controlling a mobile base. You need to protect it from deadly solar radiation, move it to strategic locations, gather resources, craft items, and maintain life-support systems. The game has a dynamic day-and-night cycle where the rising sun adds urgency to the actions you make, since you need to watch out for the instantly lethal radiation and keep in mind limited resources. Apart from that, you also need to construct new houses and have specialized buildings for processing raw materials, conducting research, or crafting equipment.

All in all, The Alters is an engaging and deep game with great graphics that features detailed character models, realistic lighting, and strange, mysterious outsides filled with toxic zones and different plants. It also has a soundtrack that matches the various moods in the game, bringing all the aspects of this title together. You can buy and download The Altars for Windows computers, Xbox, and PlayStation, and the game guarantees engaging entertainment and an emotional experience.

Is The Alters free?

While The Alters is not a free game, you can often buy it with a discount on Steam, and it comes in two different versions. You can get the base game, which will be the cheapest, or go for the Deluxe Edition, which adds the whole soundtrack and new outfits.
