FairEmail is an open-source and privacy-focused email client for Android that offers privacy controls, customization, and offline access to your messages without any trackers or ads.

About FairEmail, privacy aware email

With FairEmail, you can be sure that all your messages are encrypted, there are no ads or tracking, and it will work smoothly even on older devices. As an open-source and free app for Android phones and tablets, you can easily manage multiple email accounts, customize your interface, and choose your privacy settings from numerous advanced security options.

FairEmail works with IMAP, SMTP, and POP configurations so that you can link your accounts from other services without any trouble. It also gives you control over your information. There are no third-party analytics or server-based processing. It can encrypt your messages using OpenPGP, and you can even integrate it with external keychain software for an extra layer of security.

It's a great solution even for older devices, as FairEmail considers battery efficiency and supports multiple versions of Android as well as custom ROMs. It runs on your device and stores all data locally, but it also has built-in phishing protection, so you should download FairEmail if you're looking for the most secure email client for your phone.

Why should I download FairEmail?

While most email clients come from tech giants like Apple or Google, FairEmail is a strong alternative for Android users who value data sovereignty and privacy. It doesn't route your mail through proprietary services, your email content is not analyzed for better ad targeting, and you don't need a FairEmail account to use this app.

You can download FairEmail and use it with almost all email providers since the app fully supports open protocols like IMAP or SMTP. When setting it up, you can either manually enter your server settings or allow FairEmail to detect them on its own.

FairEmail can operate fully offline so that you can read, compose, or organize messages even if you don't have access to the internet. This is because the app stores all data locally on your device, whether it's your emails, contacts, or various metadata. This also gives you total control over where your data lives.

With FairEmail, you also get a full range of security options, starting with built-in PGP encryption, key import and export, and inline or MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) formats. All HTML is rendered safely in a sandbox environment, and the app can also detect phishing links in your messages or block automatic remote content loading.

When it comes to other features, you can use FairEmail as any other email client. Your messages are displayed as threaded conversations, and you can use swipe gestures to access different functionalities like archiving, etc. You are also able to set up custom filters, apply color-coded tags, mark messages as important, and then use that for sorting. All your inboxes can be displayed together in a single view.

You can customize how FairEmail looks by applying different themes, fonts, and layouts, and the app also has multiple settings for how you'd like to receive notifications. It's a powerful yet lightweight solution that protects your battery life and doesn't need a lot of RAM power. It can work even on the most basic or older Android devices without any trouble. You can choose to share your contacts or give the app access to your calendar, but nothing is enabled without your confirmation.

Is FairEmail free?

As an open-source project, FairEmail and its core features are available for free, but there's also an option to do a one-time upgrade that extends the app’s feature set.

With the Pro version, you get autoresponders, the ability to schedule when your messages are sent, advanced automation rules, and S/MIME certificate support. Apart from that, all the remaining functionalities are available without any cost at all.

What operating systems are compatible with FairEmail?

You can download FairEmail for Android devices, whether from the Google Play Store or F-Droid (all features unlocked), but it's also available on GitHub (official APKs).

To use FairEmail, you need a device running Android 5.0 or later. It can be installed on phones, tablets, and e-book readers, and it can also run on AOSP-based Android distributions.

What are the alternatives to FairEmail?

If you're looking for an open-source email client for computers, then Mozilla Thunderbird is an excellent choice. It works on Windows, macOS, and Linux and supports IMAP, POP3, and SMTP configurations. Apart from getting your mail, you can also use Thunderbird's built-in calendar, contact book, and task manager, making it a productivity hub. When it comes to security, it has OpenPGP support, can detect phishing, and automatically filters out spam. Mozilla Thunderbird is completely free, but there is no mobile version for Android or iOS, making it a solution only for desktop users.

Spark Mail is an excellent choice if you want to use the same email client across all of your devices, as it supports Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS. It has an extensive feature set that includes smart sorting of your messages and a team collaboration tool, and you can even search through your emails with natural language. There's a free version that gives you access to scheduling emails, snoozing them, and getting all your inboxes into a single view, but if you need more, you can go with a paid plan. With the premium tiers, you get features such as shared inboxes, task delegation, and advanced customization options.

Proton Mail is not really an email client, as the others are, but an email provider that is focused on privacy and offers end-to-end encryption of all your messages. Whether you want to use a custom domain, have zero-access encryption, integrate it with a calendar, or access a VPN, Proton Mail offers all of those features. Some functionalities are reserved only for paid plans, like unlimited storage or more email aliases, and you can use Proton Mail on Android or iOS devices as well as through its web service.
