About LightCraft

LightCraft is a photo management and editing program that emphasizes simplicity and flexibility. It allows users to organize a collection of images, adjust their appearance, and work on RAW files without altering the originals. The project is open source and draws inspiration from Adobe Lightroom’s features while developing its own solution.

The program is still under development but already offers several useful tools for organizing and enhancing photos. Some advanced features are still missing or incomplete. It may therefore appeal to photographers seeking a free alternative, provided they are willing to accept the limitations of a software program that is still in its early stages. Before downloading LightCraft, it’s best to familiarize yourself with its current features and limitations.

LightCraft is part of the ArtCraft creative and office suite, developed in Rust with the help of ClaudAI, which aims to offer a free and open-source alternative to Adobe and Microsoft products.

Why Should I Download LightCraft?

LightCraft combines two main functions: photo library management and image editing. The first helps you find your photos without having to manually browse through all the folders on your hard drive. You can organize photos by date, create albums and folders, assign ratings, or mark your favorite images. Searches can also be based on available metadata.

The software offers several settings to enhance your photos. You can adjust exposure, contrast, highlights, and shadows. White balance and colors can also be modified. Tone curves, cropping, and straightening further refine the result. Black-and-white effects, grain, and vignetting round out the editing options.

You can import your images in JPEG, PNG, TIFF, or WebP formats. The app also supports RAW files from brands such as Sony, Canon, Nikon, and Fujifilm. Depending on the camera model and compression type, some RAW files may not open fully—only the built-in preview will be displayed. It’s therefore best to check your images’ compatibility before making this your primary editing tool.

Another important point: the adjustments are non-destructive. Your raw data remains intact on your hard drive. Users can refine their edits, correct colors if needed, and then save a finished copy ready for use. Export options include JPEG, PNG, TIFF, and WebP.

Is LightCraft Free?

LightCraft is free and open-source software. Its code is distributed under a dual open-source license: MIT or Apache. You can therefore download and use it for free.

This model may appeal to users who want to keep their images on their own computer and avoid recurring fees. Since the code is publicly available, those with the necessary skills can also examine how it works or contribute to the project.

However, you should keep in mind its current stage of development. LightCraft does not yet replace all the features of established photo-editing software. Some features still need to be finalized, such as camera-specific color profiles, support for certain compressed RAW formats, and printing and photo book modules. Additionally, you won’t yet find AI-based tools to speed up complex edits: selecting the sky or a subject relies on traditional methods.

It’s therefore best to view LightCraft as a work in progress rather than a fully mature professional tool. For organizing images, testing common settings, and tracking the progress of a personal project, it already offers some interesting possibilities. However, photographers who rely on specific tools should verify that their needs are met before migrating their entire library.

What Operating Systems Are Compatible with LightCraft?

You can download LightCraft on Windows, macOS, and Linux. The software runs on all three major desktop operating systems. On Windows, an installer and a portable version are available. On macOS, the program is provided as a disk image for Intel or Apple Silicon processors, and on Linux, several installation formats are available (we offer a link to the AppImage). Users can find all of these files in the official repository (our links are direct), which is regularly updated with new releases.

The software is also available in a browser-based version thanks to WebAssembly. This option can be handy for exploring the interface without installing the application. However, it does not guarantee identical functionality across all browsers. Certain features and compatibility issues are still being improved.

What Are the Alternatives to LightCraft?

Several photo editing programs offer additional features tailored to your needs. Your requirements in terms of budget, file compatibility, and editing tools will guide your choice.

Adobe Lightroom combines photo library management with advanced RAW editing tools. It lets you organize images, apply precise adjustments, and sync your work across multiple devices depending on the plan you choose. It has a more established user base, but full access to the service requires a subscription. It’s best suited for photographers looking for a comprehensive, regularly updated solution.

Luminar focuses on photo editing and AI-powered tools. The software applies targeted corrections to your landscape photos or portraits. Users enjoy high-quality results without having to adjust dozens of sliders. It runs on Windows and macOS. This paid tool is available via a one-time license or a recurring subscription, depending on the publisher’s current plans.

RawTherapee is another option for processing RAW files. This open-source program is free and runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux. It offers numerous settings for modifying the appearance of a photo and correcting its colors. The interface may seem quite complex at first, but the program remains an excellent free alternative for editing your images in detail.
