Banking through a VPN caused no problems in our tests. We logged in to a Raiffeisen account through NordVPN, Proton VPN, ExpressVPN, Surfshark, and PIA, using the bank’s mobile apps and website. Servers ranged from Germany to Nigeria. The bank never asked for more than its usual token, and PayPal logged in normally, so a few CAPTCHAs were the only interruptions. The kill switch and the dedicated IP options showed the differences, and PIA’s kill switch leaked after a restart.

Top VPNs for Online Banking in 2026

  1. NordVPN: Best for an App-Level Kill Switch, which shuts a chosen banking app when the connection drops.
  2. Proton VPN: Best for Audited Swiss Privacy, with Securitum audits every year since 2022.
  3. ExpressVPN: Best for an Included Dedicated IP, on its Express Pro plan.
  4. Surfshark: Best for Android Banking Apps, with a GPS override that matches the VPN server.
  5. Private Internet Access: Best for a Low-Cost Dedicated IP, at $2.50 a month.

Is It Safe to Bank Through a VPN?

Yes, a reputable VPN is safe for online banking, and it protects logins on public Wi-Fi. The VPN encrypts traffic between the device and its server, so a hotel or airport network can’t read or alter the session. It also hides the device’s IP from that network. A trustworthy VPN keeps no logs of that traffic.

A VPN doesn’t stop phishing sites, malware already on the device, or a stolen password. The bank’s own two-factor check remains the main protection, and our bank’s token worked the same with or without a VPN.

How Our Bank and PayPal Responded

Our bank and PayPal accepted every VPN we used, with captchas as the only extra step. We tested the bank’s website on a Windows 11 PC in Europe and its Android app on a phone, in our September round:

  • Raiffeisen: servers in Japan, the US, Hungary, the UK, Germany, and Nigeria triggered no verification beyond the usual token. Captchas appeared on the website only, on NordVPN’s Hungarian and Japanese servers and ExpressVPN’s German and US servers.
  • PayPal: logins went through with and without a VPN. NordVPN triggered one captcha.
  • Purchases: a $2 game from Epic Games went through on a VPN connection with no extra checks.
  • Split tunneling: excluding the Raiffeisen app on Android worked on each VPN. The app then used the phone’s regular connection while other traffic stayed on the VPN.

Banking Features Compared

Kill switch results come from three Windows 11 tests: pulling the network cable, ending the app’s process, and restarting the PC. Ad and tracker blocking is each app’s D3ward score with its blocker enabled.

VPN Kill switch Dedicated IP Ad and tracker blocking CAPTCHAs at our bank
NordVPN Passed, restart included Add-on, 32 countries 76% (Complete plan) Hungary, Japan
Proton VPN Passed cable and process tests Business plans only 93% None noted
ExpressVPN Passed cable and process tests Included on Express Pro 71% (Advanced plan) Germany, US
Surfshark Passed restart in Strict mode Add-on, 15 countries 79% None noted
PIA Leaked on restart Add-on, 26 locations 96% None noted

Best VPNs for Online Banking

1. NordVPN: Best for an App-Level Kill Switch

Pros

  • App-level kill switch
  • Dedicated IP add-on
  • Threat Protection Pro
  • Split tunneling on Android

Cons

  • Steep renewal price
  • Occasional captchas

NordVPN‘s kill switch passed our cable-pull, process-kill, and restart tests, and its app-level mode can close a chosen banking app if the VPN drops. Our bank accepted it on every server, though its Hungarian and Japanese servers brought up captchas on the website. A dedicated IP costs about $4 a month extra on the two-year plan, in 32 countries.

Threat Protection Pro blocked 76% of d3ward’s test, but it starts on the Complete plan. Renewal is the weak point. The Basic plan is under $3.50 a month for 27 months, then about $139 a year. The monthly plan goes from about $15 to $22 in its second year.

2. Proton VPN: Best for Audited Swiss Privacy

Pros

  • Swiss jurisdiction
  • NetShield blocker
  • Secure Core option
  • Connection profiles

Cons

  • No personal dedicated IP
  • Uneven distant speeds

Proton VPN is a Swiss company, and Securitum has reviewed its no-logs policy annually since 2022. Its kill switch blocked traffic after we pulled the cable and after we ended the app’s process, and NetShield blocked 93% of d3ward’s ads and trackers on the VPN Plus plan. Dedicated IP addresses are sold to businesses, so personal users rely on connection profiles, which reconnect to the same server each time.

Speed on distant servers varied: its São Paulo server measured 25.14 Mbps. Banking from home on a nearby server avoids that. VPN Plus costs less than $3 a month on the two-year plan. Our Proton VPN vs NordVPN comparison covers the two in detail.

3. ExpressVPN: Best for an Included Dedicated IP

Pros

  • Dedicated IP on Express Pro
  • One-to-two-second connections
  • Split tunneling on Android

Cons

  • No multi-hop
  • CAPTCHAs on two servers

ExpressVPN‘s Express Pro plan includes a dedicated IP address, and the Basic and Advanced plans offer one as an add-on. With it, the bank sees the same IP address at every login. The kill switch stopped all traffic in both of our failure tests, and the app connected within two seconds. The bank’s website showed CAPTCHAs on its German and US servers, and the mobile app showed none.

ExpressVPN still has no multi-hop mode for double encryption. On Windows, Lightway Turbo disables split tunneling, so switch to standard Lightway before excluding a banking app. Twenty-eight months of the Basic plan cost about $84, and Express Pro is under $7.50 a month.

4. Surfshark: Best for Android Banking Apps

Pros

  • GPS override on Android
  • Unlimited devices
  • CleanWeb blocker
  • Dedicated IP add-on

Cons

  • Slow connections at times
  • Higher renewal price

Surfshark‘s Android app can override the phone’s GPS location to match the VPN server, which helps with banking apps that compare the two. Its kill switch in Strict mode blocked traffic through a PC restart, and CleanWeb blocked 79% of d3ward’s test. Dedicated IP addresses cover 18 locations in 15 countries.

A subscription has no device limit, as our guide to VPNs for multiple devices explains. Some connections took several seconds longer than on the other apps. Surfshark’s Starter plan totals about $67 over 27 months, renewing at about $79 a year.

5. Private Internet Access: Best for a Low-Cost Dedicated IP

Pros

  • Cheap dedicated IP
  • MACE blocker
  • Unlimited devices
  • Split tunneling on Android

Cons

  • Kill switch leaks on restart
  • Dated desktop app

Private Internet Access charges $2.50 a month for a dedicated IP on the two-year plan, the cheapest we found, with 26 locations. MACE blocked 96% of d3ward’s test, the best score we recorded, and the subscription covers unlimited devices. PIA’s kill switch stopped traffic after a pulled cable and a closed process.

However, it leaked when we restarted the PC with it enabled. We didn’t expect that from a VPN built around privacy, and it’s the reason PIA ranks fifth for banking. PIA costs under $2 a month over 26 months, and its Windows app looks dated next to the others.

How to Avoid Banking Flags on a VPN

  • Stay on one server: switching mid-session changes the IP address partway through a login.
  • Use your home country abroad: a server there keeps the login location familiar to the bank. For US accounts, our US VPN guide compares server coverage.
  • Exclude the banking app: split tunneling sends the app over your regular connection if it keeps asking for verification.
  • Get a dedicated IP: NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Surfshark, and PIA sell one, and the bank then sees the same IP address every time.
  • Match GPS and IP on Android: Surfshark’s GPS override helps with apps that check both.
  • Switch server after repeated captchas: one captcha is normal, but several in a row point to a heavily used IP address.

Final Thoughts

Banking worked on every VPN we tried. The choice rests on what happens when the connection fails and how consistent the IP address stays. NordVPN covers both, with an app-level kill switch and dedicated IPs in 32 countries, though renewal costs about $139 a year.

Proton VPN puts privacy first, with no dedicated IP for personal accounts. ExpressVPN bundles a dedicated IP with Express Pro, though it still lacks multi-hop. Surfshark fits Android banking apps, and PIA offers the cheapest dedicated IP but failed our restart test.

FAQ

Is NordVPN safe for banking?

Yes, NordVPN is safe for online banking. Its no-logs policy is independently audited, and its app-level kill switch can shut the banking app itself when the connection fails.

Can a bank block a VPN connection?

Yes, some banks challenge or block logins from known VPN IP addresses, usually with a CAPTCHA or an extra verification step. A dedicated IP address makes this less likely.

Is a free VPN safe for online banking?

Only a few are. Many free VPNs share crowded servers or log browsing data. Proton VPN's free tier keeps its audited no-logs policy, but it assigns servers at random.

Should I use a VPN for banking abroad?

Yes, especially on hotel or airport Wi-Fi. The VPN encrypts the session, and a home-country server avoids a login from an unfamiliar country.
