The Best VPN for Cheaper Flights in 2026

Switching VPN countries made no difference to what Air France charged. In our October tests, its own website quoted the same New York to Paris fare in eight countries, within $3 once converted to dollars. Skyscanner was different: its Thai site showed the lowest nonstop fares on both routes we checked, about 4% below the US price.

The Air France fare we followed to checkout from Thailand undercut the US by less than 1%, thanks to an agency discount on a fare with no bags, and with a cabin bag added it cost more.

Best Countries to Set a VPN for Cheap Flights

We searched two long-haul routes from a Windows PC in Europe, connecting NordVPN to a new country before every search. Each search ran in a fresh private window, and we left each site on the country version and currency it picked for us. Every fare was a one-week round trip for one adult in economy, departing about six weeks later. We converted all of them to US dollars at the European Central Bank’s reference rates from the same week.

New York to Paris: One Price on Air France’s Site

Air France’s own site charged the same fare wherever we connected from. Its lowest and highest countries were $2.60 apart, and that difference is currency rounding. Its Turkish site didn’t even switch currency and quoted the same USD 358 as the American one.

The French site, the airline’s home market, came out second most expensive, by cents. Skyscanner’s markets spread wider, with $33 between Thailand at $670.93 and Indonesia at $704.04. Indonesia was the only market priced above the US.

Los Angeles to Tokyo: The Order Changed With the Airline

Thailand again had the lowest price for the cheapest nonstop, Zipair, at $813.17, which is $36 (4.2%) under the US fare. Japan, the airline’s home market, was the most expensive of all eight. For ANA’s nonstop on the same days, the order reversed. The US market came out cheapest at $1,041, and every other country cost more, Indonesia by 7.4%. A market that saves money on one airline can cost you on the next.

The Countries Worth Trying First

1. Thailand. It showed the lowest cheapest-nonstop fare on Skyscanner on both routes, about 4% below the US. Our VPN for Thailand guide covers servers there.
2. Your own country. For ANA, the US market beat every alternative, so keep your home fare as the number to beat.
3. France. It came in 1.6% to 2.1% below the US on Skyscanner, though not on Air France’s own site.

Mexico and India stayed within about 2% of the US price in either direction, so a VPN connection there won’t reliably save money. Indonesia cost more than the US in every Skyscanner search we ran. Turkey’s Skyscanner site stopped us with a bot check on both routes, so we couldn’t price it.

What Happened at Checkout

On the Paris route, we took Air France’s nonstop flights from the Thai market through to booking. By then Skyscanner listed it at ฿23,721 through MakeMyTrip, against ฿23,925 through Air France and KLM directly. MakeMyTrip’s fare summary showed THB 23,720.21, about $711, which is under the $717 the same flights cost on the US site.

The saving came with conditions. A discount code MakeMyTrip applied was worth ฿1,219, about $37, and the fare was Air France’s Light economy, with no cabin bag and no checked bag. Adding a 7 kg cabin bag cost ฿307.93, which took the total to about $720.60, more than the US price. MakeMyTrip also labeled it a special fare, with the ticket issued up to seven hours after payment.

Its booking form required passport details and a phone number, with the country code preset to Thailand (+66), though it can be changed. We stopped before paying, so we can’t say whether it accepts a foreign card.

How to Compare Flight Prices With a VPN

1. Search from home first, with no VPN. Note the fare and what it includes, since that’s the price every other country has to beat.
2. Connect the VPN to one country, then open a new private window. A VPN changes your IP address, but a site you opened before connecting can keep your old location in its cookies.
3. Run the same route and dates. Let the site choose its country version and currency, and note the cheapest nonstop fare.
4. Clear your cookies between countries. In Chrome, it’s under “Delete browsing data,” or close the private window and open a new one.
5. Convert every fare to one currency, then follow the lowest one to checkout and check the total with bags before you pay.

Check the airline’s own site as well. On our Paris route it quoted the same fare in every country, so if an aggregator shows a lower price, the difference comes from the agency selling the ticket.

Risks of Booking in Another Country’s Currency

• Card fees can cancel the saving. Many cards add a foreign transaction fee of up to 3% to purchases in another currency, which would erase most of the 4% difference we found. A card with no foreign transaction fee keeps it.
• Agency fares carry their own rules. The Thai listing we followed dropped both bags and delayed the ticket by up to seven hours. Compare fares with the same baggage, and check who issues the ticket before paying.
• Some sites block VPN traffic. Skyscanner’s Turkish site met our Turkish server with a bot check both times. Using a VPN to compare prices is legal in the US, the UK and the EU, but it can breach a booking site’s terms of use.

Cheaper Flight VPNs Compared

We measured each VPN’s servers in Mexico and India, two of the markets in our fare searches, on a Windows 11 PC in Europe against a 190.36 Mbps connection:

Tracker blocking is the share of ads and trackers each VPN stopped on d3ward’s test page. Speed made no difference to the fares we saw, so pick on country coverage and extras such as tracker blocking.

NordVPN is the VPN we ran every flight search through, and it connected in all nine countries, Thailand and Japan included. Its Mexican server recorded 178.08 Mbps, ahead of ExpressVPN’s 147.51 Mbps, and its Mumbai server 170.95 Mbps. 2. Proton VPN: Best for Blocking Trackers on Booking Sites

Booking sites load many tracking scripts, and Proton VPN’s NetShield blocked 126 of 135 ads and trackers on d3ward’s test page, 93%, ahead of NordVPN’s 76% and ExpressVPN’s 71%. That won’t lower a fare by itself, but it cuts down what follows you from one search to the next. Proton VPN has 220 servers in Mexico, split between Mexico City and Querétaro.

Those Mexican servers were also slow, at 76.78 Mbps against NordVPN’s 178.08 Mbps, so choose another VPN if Mexico is your main market. Its 30-day refund covers only the unused part of a plan. The two-year VPN Plus plan costs about $3 a month.

3. ExpressVPN: Quickest to Switch Between Countries

Pricing eight markets means reconnecting eight times, and ExpressVPN was the quickest to do it, connecting in one to two seconds on Windows. Its Mexican server recorded 147.51 Mbps. Its India location is served from the UK and Singapore, and the UK-based option recorded 182.82 Mbps with an Indian IP address, though we didn’t run our flight searches through it.

The Basic plan comes with Lite Protection, which leaves trackers unblocked, and there are few settings to change. The Basic plan averages under $3 a month over a 28-month first term, and our cheap VPN list compares it with others.

Can a Free VPN Find Cheaper Flights?

Not in a way you can control. Proton VPN’s free plan picks your country from a list of 10, and you can’t choose it yourself. A VPN won’t uncover a hidden airline fare. Air France quoted the same price in every country we tried, and the airline’s home market was the most expensive on our Tokyo route. The savings we found came from aggregators, where Thailand came in about 4% below the US on both routes. The one Thai fare we took to checkout saved less than 1%, and only with a discount code on a fare with no bags.
