Most Swedish TV is locked to Sweden, but how much you lose abroad depends on the streaming service and on where you are. In our September tests from Europe, SVT Play’s live channels and TV4 Play were blocked, UR Play worked, and Viaplay sent us to a local partner service. On Stockholm servers, NordVPN, Proton VPN, and ExpressVPN unblocked every Swedish streaming service we tried, and NordVPN was the fastest at 184.51 Mbps.
How to Watch Swedish TV Abroad: 4 Steps for September 2026
- Subscribe to a VPN with Stockholm servers. We recommend NordVPN, the fastest in our Swedish tests.
- Install the app on your computer, phone, or TV and sign in.
- Connect to a server in Sweden to get a Swedish IP address.
- Open the Swedish streaming service and sign in. TV4 Play requires a free account with a Swedish postal code.
How to Set Up a VPN for Swedish TV
Pick Sweden from the VPN’s country list, and the app connects you to a Stockholm server that Swedish broadcasters treat as a local viewer. Connect before you load the streaming service, since a page opened first keeps your real location in its cookies. Then sign in and start a program as you would at home.
Which Swedish TV Works Abroad Without a VPN?
We checked each streaming service from Europe without a VPN, then again on a Stockholm server:
| Streaming service | Cost | From abroad, no VPN | On a Swedish server |
|---|---|---|---|
| SVT Play | Free | Some programs only, live SVT1 blocked | Unblocked |
| UR Play | Free | Worked | Not required |
| TV4 Play | Free with an account, paid tiers | Blocked | Unblocked |
| Viaplay | Paid | Redirected to a local partner | Swedish sign-up page loaded |
| Kanal 5 (HBO Max, discovery+) | Paid | Blocked | Swedish plans offered |
| Netflix Sweden | Paid | Local library shown | Swedish library unblocked |
SVT Play is partly open worldwide. SVT clears some programs for viewing abroad, and the “Kan ses utomlands” filter on svtplay.se/program lists them. Its Christmas calendar is usually viewable worldwide until December 31. Live channels and many bought-in programs stay limited to Sweden, and a blocked program shows “Programmet kan bara ses i Sverige.”
TV4 Play states its own rule on the block screen: content plays in Sweden, or with a paid subscription in the EEA. We created a free account from Europe with a Swedish postal code, but nothing played until we connected to a Swedish server. UR Play, the educational broadcaster’s service, played without a VPN.
Do You Need a VPN for Swedish TV in the EU?
Only for some of it. Under EU Regulation 2017/1128, in force since April 2018, paid streaming subscriptions must work for their subscribers when they’re temporarily in another EU or EEA country. That covers Swedes on holiday in Spain or living part of the year in Norway:
- Paid subscriptions follow you: TV4 Play’s paid tiers, Viaplay, and HBO Max work in the EU with a Swedish account.
- Free and Sweden-only content doesn’t: SVT Play’s live channels and TV4 Play’s free tier stay blocked.
- Outside the EU and EEA, portability doesn’t apply, so paid services block you too.
A VPN also matters before you subscribe. Viaplay and HBO Max offered Swedish plans only once we had a Swedish IP address.
Swedish TV VPNs Compared
We measured each VPN’s Stockholm server on a Windows 11 PC in Europe, against a 190.36 Mbps connection:
| VPN | Stockholm download | Ping | Swedish servers | Netflix Sweden |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | 184.51 Mbps | 58 ms | 140+ in Stockholm | Unblocked |
| Proton VPN | 169.38 Mbps | 59 ms | 432 in Stockholm | After clearing cookies |
| ExpressVPN | 169.56 Mbps | 61 ms | Two locations | Unblocked |
SVT Play, TV4 Play, and the Swedish sign-up pages for Viaplay and HBO Max worked on NordVPN, Proton VPN, and ExpressVPN. Netflix Sweden was the only streaming service where results differed.
Best VPNs for Swedish TV in 2026
- NordVPN: Best overall for Swedish TV, with the fastest Stockholm speeds we measured.
- Proton VPN: Best for server choice, with 432 servers in Stockholm.
- ExpressVPN: Best for simple setup, with nothing to configure before connecting.
1. NordVPN: Fastest VPN for Swedish TV
Pros
- Fast Stockholm servers
- Swedish Netflix without extra steps
- SVT Play and TV4 Play
- Native Fire TV and Apple TV apps
- NordLynx protocol
Cons
- Windows conflicts with other VPNs
- Malware blocking not in Basic
NordVPN’s Stockholm server recorded 184.51 Mbps, only 3.1% below our connection’s full speed, enough speed for live SVT1 in HD. It has 140+ servers in Stockholm, and it unblocked every Swedish service we tried, including Netflix Sweden straight away. That record puts it at the top of our streaming VPN rankings.
On our Windows PC, NordVPN sometimes failed to connect while another VPN app was installed, so remove old VPN apps before you travel. The Basic plan costs under $3.50 a month on a 27-month subscription and covers 10 devices.
2. Proton VPN: Most Swedish Servers
Pros
- Largest Stockholm network
- SVT Play on first try
- Privacy-focused Swiss base
- Tor over VPN servers
- NetShield ad blocker
Cons
- Netflix worked after a cookie reset
- No Smart DNS
Proton VPN has 432 servers in Stockholm, the largest Swedish network we saw, and its Stockholm server recorded 169.38 Mbps. SVT Play, TV4 Play, and the Viaplay and HBO Max sign-up pages loaded on the first try. We expected Netflix Sweden to work too, since Proton VPN’s streaming has improved a lot overall. It was blocked at first and unblocked the Swedish library only after we cleared the browser’s cache and cookies.
The VPN Plus plan comes to less than $3 a month over two years, and its no-logs policy has passed independent audits every year since 2022.
3. ExpressVPN: Simplest Setup for Swedish TV
Pros
- Nothing to configure
- Swedish Netflix unblocked
- Native Apple TV app
- One-click connections
- Automatic protocol choice
Cons
- No Swedish city names
- Ad blocker only on Advanced
ExpressVPN lists two Swedish locations, “Sweden” and “Sweden – 2”, with no city named. Its Swedish connection recorded 169.56 Mbps and unblocked each Swedish streaming service we tried, Netflix Sweden included, with nothing to configure. ExpressVPN’s Basic plan averages below $3 monthly across its 28-month first term and covers 10 devices. Our list of cheap VPNs compares its price with others.
Can You Use a Free VPN for Swedish TV?
Not for a Swedish IP address. None of the free plans we checked, from Proton VPN, Windscribe, PrivadoVPN, and Hide.me, offers a server in Sweden. Two Swedish services work without one: UR Play played from abroad in our test, and SVT Play’s “Kan ses utomlands” section is open worldwide. For everything else, a paid VPN with Swedish servers is the practical choice. Our list of the best free VPNs covers what free plans do well.
Swedish TV Not Working With a VPN?
- Clear cookies and cache. It fixed Netflix Sweden on Proton VPN in our test.
- Check what SVT sees. svtplay.se/debug shows the IP address SVT Play reads. SVT says it doesn’t support VPNs, so an occasional program may still fail.
- Finish the TV4 Play registration. Nothing plays until it’s done.
- Switch Stockholm servers if one is detected, and update the VPN app before you travel.
Any VPN for Sweden with Stockholm servers and a good streaming record should handle the rest.
Final Thoughts
Watching Swedish TV abroad starts with where you are. Inside the EU and EEA, paid subscriptions follow you, and SVT Play and UR Play keep part of their catalogs open worldwide. Live SVT channels, TV4 Play’s free tier, and every paid service outside Europe require a Swedish IP address. NordVPN was the fastest on its Stockholm server and unblocked everything we tried without extra steps.
Proton VPN has the most Swedish servers, and ExpressVPN requires no setup. A VPN has pros and cons beyond streaming, and the same Swedish connection can even help compare flight prices by region. Our best VPN rankings compare more choices.
FAQs
Where can Swedish TV be watched online?
SVT Play and UR Play are free, and TV4 Play has a free tier with an account. Viaplay, HBO Max, and Netflix Sweden require paid subscriptions, and most limit content to Sweden.
Can SVT Play be watched abroad?
Yes, partly. SVT Play keeps a selection of programs open worldwide under its "Kan ses utomlands" filter, but live channels and many bought-in programs require a Swedish IP address.
Can TV4 Play be watched outside Sweden?
Yes, with a paid subscription anywhere in the EEA, or with a VPN connected to Sweden elsewhere. The free tier plays only in Sweden, even with a registered account.
How can Swedish TV be watched in Spain or Norway?
Paid Swedish subscriptions work in Spain and Norway under EU portability rules. Free content such as SVT's live channels requires a VPN server in Sweden in both countries.
Does Viaplay work outside Sweden?
Yes, for existing Swedish subscribers traveling in the EU and EEA. Outside that area, and for new sign-ups from abroad, Viaplay redirects visitors unless they connect through a Swedish IP address.
Is there a free VPN with Swedish servers?
No, Proton VPN's free plan and the free tiers of Windscribe, PrivadoVPN, and Hide.me include no Swedish locations. Paid VPNs such as NordVPN include Swedish servers and a 30-day money-back guarantee.
