Best VPN for Morocco in 2026: 5 VPNs for Expats and Travelers

Morocco attracts many people who stay longer than a short holiday, from expats and students to remote workers in Marrakech and families renting a riad for a few weeks. The internet there is fast and mostly unrestricted.

Still, the French channels, BBC programs, and US shows you watch at home won’t play. Those services stream only to viewers in their own countries. Privacy is the other reason people look for a VPN in Morocco. Café, hotel, and riad Wi-Fi is shared with strangers.

More alarmingly, Moroccan authorities have prosecuted people over what they post online. A VPN for Morocco helps with both. Here’s our shortlist first, then what each VPN unblocked.

Our Morocco VPN Shortlist for 2026

  1. NordVPN: Best overall, with fast servers and every streaming service we tried
  2. Proton VPN: Best for privacy, with a Swiss base and yearly audits
  3. ExpressVPN: Best for easy everyday use on any device
  4. Surfshark: Best for streaming on many devices
  5. Private Internet Access: Best low-cost VPN for Morocco

The VPNs We’d Use in Morocco

In October, we tested each VPN’s speeds on UK, US, and Japanese servers. We then tried France.tv, TF1+, M6+, and RTVE Play on its French and Spanish servers. We also tried our usual streaming set, from BBC iPlayer and ITVX to Netflix US and Japan.

1. NordVPN: Best Overall VPN for Morocco

Pros

  • Smart DNS for smart TVs and consoles
  • Obfuscated servers for restrictive networks
  • Meshnet links your devices back home
  • Double VPN for an extra layer of encryption

Cons

  • Higher price after the first term

NordVPN lost only 7.8% of our speed on average, which you won’t notice while streaming or on a video call. It unblocked all the streaming services we tried, from the French channels and RTVE Play to BBC iPlayer and Netflix US. Its kill switch, which cuts your internet if the VPN drops, kept our connection protected even when we restarted the PC.

That’s useful on shared riad or café Wi-Fi. NordVPN also has a native app for Apple TV, and our guide to the best VPNs for Apple TV covers the setup. The Basic plan costs $3.49 a month for the first 27 months ($94.23). Renewal is the catch: after that term, the same plan costs $139.08 a year.

Disable auto-renewal before the term ends if you’d like to compare prices first. Our NordVPN review has the full test results.

2. Proton VPN: Best for Privacy in Morocco

Pros

  • Swiss privacy laws
  • Secure Core servers for a second layer of privacy
  • Stealth protocol on every plan
  • NetShield blocks ads and malware sites

Cons

  • Couldn’t unblock Hulu, Pluto TV, or ITVX
  • No Smart DNS feature

Proton VPN has the strongest privacy record on our list. An independent firm audits its no-logs policy every year, confirming that it keeps no record of your activity. It lost 10.2% of our speed on average, a small drop for browsing and HD streaming. French and Spanish TV worked, and it also unblocked Netflix US and BBC iPlayer.

However, it failed with Hulu, Pluto TV, and ITVX, which NordVPN and ExpressVPN unblocked. Proton VPN also lacks Smart DNS, a feature that helps on smart TVs without a VPN app. NordVPN has it. While the default kill switch may leak your IP when you restart your laptop, its advanced kill switch won’t, so I recommend it instead.

The VPN Plus plan is $2.99 a month on a two-year term, $71.76 up front, and renews at $83.88 a year. Refunds within 30 days are pro rata, covering only the days you haven’t used.

3. ExpressVPN: Best for Easy Everyday Use

Pros

  • Quick to connect
  • Simple, beginner-friendly apps
  • MediaStreamer for consoles and TVs
  • Router app for the whole home

Cons

  • Limited settings for advanced users
  • Lighter ad blocking on the Basic plan

ExpressVPN matched NordVPN’s speed, with a 7.8% average speed loss. Its obfuscation, which makes VPN traffic look like ordinary web traffic, works without any setup. It unblocked the French and Spanish channels and every other service we tried. Settings are limited. To fine-tune protocols and encryption, PIA offers more control.

The Basic plan also comes with a lighter version of its ad blocker, and a browser ad blocker makes up for it. ExpressVPN costs $2.99 a month for the first 28 months of its Basic plan ($83.72), then $99.95 a year. Our ExpressVPN review goes into detail, and our pages on ExpressVPN promo codes and the latest VPN deals list current discounts.

4. Surfshark: Best for Streaming on Many Devices

Pros

  • One plan for every device you own
  • Alternative ID for sign-ups
  • Camouflage Mode hides VPN use from your network
  • Bypasser for apps that should skip the VPN

Cons

  • Couldn’t unblock ITVX
  • Occasionally slow to connect

Surfshark unblocked French and Spanish TV, Netflix, and BBC iPlayer, and ITVX was its only streaming failure. For ITVX, use NordVPN, ExpressVPN, or PIA. It lost 9.6% of our speed on average, and CleanWeb, its ad blocker, removed most ads and trackers. Connections sometimes took a few seconds longer than usual.

If the app seems stuck, cancel and try again, or try a different server in that country. With no device limit, one plan covers a whole family’s phones, laptops, and TVs. Surfshark Starter costs $2.49 a month for 27 months ($67.23), then $79 a year.

5. Private Internet Access: Best Low-Cost VPN for Morocco

Pros

  • Port forwarding on non-US servers
  • MACE blocker for ads and trackers
  • Unlimited simultaneous connections
  • Fine control over protocols and encryption

Cons

  • Couldn’t unblock Prime Video or HBO Max
  • Dated, cluttered app
  • Slower protocol set by default

Private Internet Access costs $1.89 a month for its first 26 months ($49.14), and it renews at the same $49.14 a year. That’s the lowest price on our list, and our roundup of cheap VPNs compares it with other budget VPNs. It worked with French and Spanish TV, BBC iPlayer, and Netflix US, but it failed with five services in our tests, including Prime Video and HBO Max.

NordVPN, ExpressVPN, and Surfshark unblocked both. Its 12.7% average speed loss was the highest on our list, though still fast enough for HD streaming. MACE, its ad blocker, stopped 96% of ads and trackers, the best result on our list. Its Windows app looks dated and uses a slower protocol by default.

Switch to WireGuard in the settings for better speed, and enable the Advanced Kill Switch, which passed our restart test. Our Private Internet Access review goes through the rest of its features.

Is a VPN Legal in Morocco?

Yes, VPNs are legal in Morocco. No law there restricts VPN use. What you do online still falls under Moroccan law, though. Freedom House reports that people have been prosecuted over social media posts, and a VPN doesn’t make an illegal post legal.

What a VPN Unblocks in Morocco

Use a server in the country whose service you want to watch. Streaming services check your IP address. A VPN that changes your location makes them see you as a viewer in that country:

  • French TV: a French server for France.tv, TF1+, and M6+. All five VPNs unblocked them.
  • Spanish TV: a Spanish server for RTVE Play, which also worked with all five VPNs.
  • British TV: a UK server for BBC iPlayer. ITVX worked with NordVPN, ExpressVPN, and PIA.
  • US streaming: a US server for Netflix US. Netflix in Morocco has its own, different catalog.

For everyday browsing, a nearby server in Spain or France keeps the connection quick. Football works differently: beIN Sports and TOD show most matches in Morocco, with no VPN required. If you’re outside the country and want Moroccan channels, our Moroccan IP address guide explains the setup.

Calls, Censorship, and Privacy in Morocco

WhatsApp and Viber calls work in Morocco, on mobile data and home connections. The country blocked internet calling apps in 2016 but lifted the block in November that year. Website blocking is rare. Freedom House’s 2025 report rates Morocco Partly Free and found no sites blocked for political, social, or religious content.

A school, office, or hotel network may still filter some sites, and our guide on how to unblock a website covers those cases. Spyware is a separate concern. In October 2026, Amnesty International reported that Pegasus spyware had been used against Moroccan journalists and activists, which Morocco denies.

A VPN can’t remove spyware from a phone. It does encrypt your traffic, which hides what you browse from your ISP and others on the same Wi-Fi network. Your ISP also can’t slow down a specific service it can’t identify, a practice our guide to stopping ISP throttling explains.

Final Thoughts

Should you use a VPN in Morocco? For most people, yes, for two jobs: streaming your home-country TV and keeping your browsing private on shared Wi-Fi. The five VPNs differ mostly in speed, the other services they unblock, and their privacy features. NordVPN is our top recommendation. It was one of our two fastest VPNs and had no streaming failures in our tests.

If privacy comes first, choose Proton VPN, as long as you don’t rely on ITVX, Hulu, or Pluto TV. On a tight budget, PIA costs the least, but it couldn’t unblock several streaming services. Set the VPN up on your phone and laptop before you join café or riad Wi-Fi, and add it to your TV or streaming stick for evening viewing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a VPN legal in Morocco?

Yes. No Moroccan law bans VPN use. A VPN doesn't change what's legal, though, and Moroccan law on online posts applies with or without one.

Do WhatsApp calls work in Morocco?

Yes. Moroccan mobile and home connections allow WhatsApp and Viber calls without a VPN. Internet calling apps were blocked over Moroccan networks in the past, but that block was lifted.

What is the best VPN for Morocco?

NordVPN is the best VPN for Morocco, with fast servers and wide streaming support. Proton VPN is the better fit for privacy-focused users, with Swiss privacy laws and independent no-logs audits.

Can you watch French TV in Morocco with a VPN?

Yes. France.tv, TF1+, and M6+ mainly serve viewers in France, and a VPN set to a French server unblocks them. NordVPN, Proton VPN, ExpressVPN, Surfshark, and PIA work with these services.

Is the internet censored in Morocco?

No, not heavily. Most websites and apps load normally in Morocco, but people have faced prosecution for online posts, and rights groups have reported spyware use against journalists.

Is Netflix available in Morocco?

Yes. Netflix operates in Morocco with its own catalog, which differs from the US library. A VPN set to another country shows that country's Netflix catalog instead.
