Monitor your CPU’s health with Core Temp—a lightweight, precise tool that tracks real-time core temperatures, helping you detect overheating, test cooling efficiency, and keep your system stable without slowing down performance.

About Core Temp

Core Temp is a lightweight utility for Windows that displays the real-time temperature of each CPU core. It bypasses the motherboard estimations and reads raw data from Digital Thermal Sensors (DTS) on the processor to give you core-by-core accurate readings in an easy-to-read window.

You can permanently leave Core Temp in the system tray, or open it while gaming/encoding to see how fast the cores go from hot to cool. It has a minimal footprint, so it would not use any CPU or memory resources that are enough to slow down your system. The software is modular, and several plug-ins can be added, with official add-ons like Core Temp Gadget, which pins a live reading to the desktop, and Core Temp Monitor for Android, which allows you to monitor temperatures over the network from your phone.

Core Temp is a 100% accurate temperature reporting program with no fan speed or voltage adjustments. Most users don't need to do anything more than know the temperature of their CPU and if it is below or above the safe limit.

Why Should I Download Core Temp?

The best feature of Core Temp is its reliability. Many OEM tools offer imprecise, latency-based readings from sensors outside the CPU itself. Core Temp reads directly from each core's temperature sensor, so spikes or drops in temperature are shown immediately. This rapid feedback allows you to identify issues with cooling, thermal paste failure, or poor airflow immediately.

Core Temp is a must-have for overclockers, as well as new system builders. Running a CPU hotter than specs will destabilize in a few degrees, so being able to track each core is key in knowing if one core is overheating versus the others (usually means bad thermal contact vs. a non-even fan curve). It's a reasonable source of resilience in times of stress testing.

You do not need to be a computer expert to benefit. You know, an average person can easily tell if the laptop is overheating due to dust, background applications, or improper cooling. The UI is clean: temperatures on the left, CPU info on the right, and optional logging if you want to track changes.

Core Temp's Open Architecture enables functionality by using plug-ins that do not clutter the main program, but actually extend its functionality. For instance, you can add a plug-in that changes RGB color on the basis of CPU load or a plug-in for displaying real-time graphs. If you're gadget-y and the WLM doesn't do it for you, the Core Temp Gadget allows you to stick live temperature graphs to your desktop, even on older versions of Windows.

This makes Core Temp a reliable companion for everyone who doesn't just want to use, but also wants to know what's going on with their machine. It doesn't offer spam alerts, it doesn't ask for a registration, it doesn't offer premiums, it does what it said it would do.

Is Core Temp Free?

Yes, Core Temp is fully free. Download it from the official site and install it without any limitations. There are no chargeable versions or subscriptions; plug-ins and mobile extensions are all open to all. The application is local and does not send your data anywhere. It's an uncommon tool that does what it says is what it does without expecting anything in return, but perhaps a polite update check.

What Operating Systems Are Compatible with Core Temp?

Core Temp supports almost all versions of Windows that are still being used. It is supported on XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10, 11, and all Windows Server editions from 2003 to 2025. Whether you are using an older workstation or a new gaming rig, it is installed quickly and boots up immediately. The installer is only a few megabytes, and there is also a portable version that does not require any installation.

Core Temp supports 32-bit and 64-bit x86 processors from Intel, AMD, and VIA - from the earliest dual-core and on to the latest Ryzen and Core i9. No additional drivers or BIOS manipulation is necessary. Simply download, execute, and your temperatures are displayed at a glance.

Core Temp also has optional plug-ins for connection to other platforms. The Core Temp Remote Server plug-in enables temperature updates to be transmitted over the network to external apps such as an Android monitor. Also, there is Core Temp MC, an add-on for Windows Media Center for older systems that shows CPU data inside the Media Center interface, great for HTPCs that get hot in tight cases.

Because it reads directly from CPU sensors, Core Temp remains compatible across generations of hardware. It has small, frequent updates, which help keep it working with new CPUs. It's stable, low maintenance, and safe to keep running in the background.

What Are the Alternatives to Core Temp?

OCCT (OverClock Checking Tool) is a heavier software than Core Temp. It provides a stress test for CPU, GPU, and power supply, as well as a comprehensive chart of temperature, voltage, and load. Overclockers use it to exercise a system to its limits and stress test its cooling and stability. It is resource-intensive, and its interface is denser. Day-to-day monitoring is overkill, but instability checking or benchmarking is one of the best all-in-one tools.

HWMonitor by CPUID monitors almost every sensor in a PC - Temperatures, voltages, fan speeds, and laptop battery status. It's a general health measure of the entire system, but it doesn't deliver per-core figures as accurately, and it lags a bit behind. The interface is user-friendly, with minimum, current, and maximum values. HWMonitor is awesome for quick checks or for checking your PSU and cooling, but it's not as light as Core Temp, or as accurate as it is in real-time for the core.

Speccy by Piriform (the makers of CCleaner) is a system profiling utility. It details your hardware - CPU, RAM, motherboard, GPU, storage, and gives basic temperature info. It's not a continuous monitoring solution, but more for getting a clear view of what's inside your PC. Speccy has a high-level view and isn't as detailed in thermal reporting as Core Temp, but it does work well for a high-level view, and the temps update less often and don't contain per-core detail.
