Its German server lost just 1.3% of our speed, and VPN Plus costs under $3 a month on a two-year plan.

The free plan is a different product. It has no data limit, requires no payment details, and comes with the same audited no-logs policy as paid accounts. However, Germany isn’t on its free list. The app assigns one of ten countries for you, such as the Netherlands, Poland, or Switzerland, on a single device.

Its allowance works differently, though. Verified accounts receive 10 GB a month, and unverified ones 2 GB. When the data is used up, the connection simply stops, with no slow server to fall back on. Speed is the trade-off. Its German server lost 7.4% of our connection, the biggest loss of the five, and free accounts share servers in just seven countries. For browsing, email, and banking, that speed is still enough. The bigger limit is what the free plan blocks.

Streaming is a paid feature, so Netflix Germany and German TV are out of reach on a free account.
