These days, simply being online means exposing yourself to countless privacy risks. From companies tracking your every move to the threat of data breaches and surveillance, your personal information is constantly at risk. That’s where VPNs come in by offering a layer of protection that helps you regain control of your digital privacy. One of the more prominent players in this space is hide.me, a VPN that has been around since 2012. Over the years, it has gained a reputation for its robust security features, reliable performance, and privacy-focused policies.

While hide.me excels in many areas, it’s not perfect. It may have progressed in terms of speed and security, but there are still a few areas where it doesn’t quite meet expectations, especially when compared to some of the best VPNs.

Curious to know where it falls behind? In this hide.me review, we’ll break down everything you need to know about hide.me — the good, the bad, and whether it’s the right choice for you.

3.5

hide.me

Although it is not THE reference, hide.me offers a reliable VPN, capable of ensuring your online security or accessing exclusive content. The cherry on top is that it offers a free plan.

Pros

  • Advanced features like StealthGuard
  • Reliable speeds on regional servers
  • Supports major platforms and torrenting
  • Multiple protocol options
  • Offers a free plan

Cons

  • Slower speeds on long-distance servers
  • Customer support lacks instant live chat
  • Outdated knowledge base resources
  • Bolt “Fast Proxy” limited to Windows

hide.me Pricing: Is It Affordable?

hide.me offers several pricing plans tailored to different user needs, no matter if you’re looking for a long-term commitment or a more flexible month-to-month option. Let’s break down the available options, including a detailed review of the pricing structure and the overall value each plan provides.

Plans and Pricing

hide.me provides three primary subscription plans:

  • 1 Month Plan: Priced at $9.95 per month, this plan offers complete access to all premium features without a long-term commitment. It’s ideal for users who want the flexibility to cancel after a short period but isn’t the most cost-effective choice over time.
  • 12 Months Plan: At $4.49 per month, it offers a significant discount compared to the monthly plan and is a great value for consistent users.
  • 24 Months Plan: At $2.59 per month, it offers the lowest monthly cost. It’s perfect for those committed to long-term VPN usage, providing a huge discount compared to shorter plans.

Is the hide.me Free Plan Worth It?

Hide.me also offers a free VPN plan without ads, which is quite popular. However, it’s important to note that the free version comes with significant limitations that affect its usability for heavy internet users. The free plan allows users to connect to only eight server locations and supports a single device connection. While it does offer decent privacy and security features, performance tends to suffer due to limited speeds.

While it’s a good entry-level option for those who want to try out basic VPN services, most users will find they need to upgrade to a paid plan for a more complete experience.

Money-Back Guarantee

One of the standout features of hide.me’s pricing structure is the 30-day money-back guarantee, which lets you test the service without long-term risk. If you’re not satisfied, you can request a refund within the first 30 days, no questions asked.

This provides peace of mind, allowing you to experience the VPN in-depth and make an informed decision without worrying about commitment.

Payment Methods

Hide.me offers a wide range of payment methods, offering flexibility and anonymity for users who prefer more privacy in their transactions. The platform accepts:

  • Credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Amex)
  • PayPal
  • Google Pay and Apple Pay
  • Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other major options for those who prefer added anonymity

Renewal Costs and Considerations

One aspect that often catches users off-guard with subscription services is renewal costs. hide.me keeps things transparent with their renewal prices. The price at which you initially sign up will be the same price upon renewal, so you won’t face any unexpected price hikes when your subscription renews.

This consistency makes hide.me’s pricing is more appealing, especially compared to VPNs that increase renewal prices after the first term.

Security Features: How Safe Is hide.me?

When it comes to any VPN, security is arguably the most critical aspect to review. In our analysis of hide.me, we closely examined its core and advanced security features to determine just how well it safeguards users’ privacy.

Core Security Features

At its core, hide.me offers a solid lineup of basic security features that every reputable VPN should include:

  • AES-256 Encryption: hide.me employs the industry-standard AES-256 encryption to secure your data. This level of encryption is widely considered unbreakable and is used by military and financial institutions, which adds an essential layer of protection.
  • Kill Switch: It automatically blocks internet access if the VPN connection drops unexpectedly, preventing any accidental IP leaks for uninterrupted anonymity.
  • Multiple Protocols: hide.me supports multiple security protocols, such as WireGuard, OpenVPN, SoftEtherVPN, IKEv2, and SSTP. These protocols offer a balance between speed and security, allowing you to choose the one that best fits your needs.
  • Split Tunneling: hide.me allows users to choose which apps or traffic go through the VPN and which do not. This is especially useful for tasks like streaming or online banking, where you may not want to route all your data through the VPN.
  • Auto Connect: Another convenient feature is the auto-connect option, so that your VPN connection activates automatically, keeping users secure without the need to turn the VPN on manually every time.

Advanced Security Features

hide.me also includes several advanced features that elevate its overall security profile:

  • StealthGuard: This feature goes beyond a typical kill switch by allowing you to lock down specific apps or your entire connection to the VPN. It is useful for those looking to secure torrenting apps or other sensitive software, so that these apps can only function with an active VPN connection.
  • SmartGuard: hide.me’s ad and tracker blocker, SmartGuard, is designed to protect users from malicious websites, intrusive ads, and trackers.
  • Double VPN (Multihop): With Multihop, hide.me lets you connect to multiple VPN servers in sequence. It adds an extra layer of security by routing your traffic through two different servers, making it even harder for anyone to trace your online activities.
  • Dynamic Port Forwarding: hide.me offers dynamic port forwarding to improve connectivity for those who require specific ports for activities like torrenting or gaming. By dynamically opening and closing ports as needed, you get better security, preventing static vulnerabilities that hackers could exploit.
  • Startpage Integration: hide.me integrates with Startpage, a privacy-focused search engine. This allows you to use a secure and anonymous search engine directly from within the VPN app, keeping your searches private and untracked.

Overall, hide.me stands out in our security review due to its comprehensive suite of basic and advanced features. Whether you’re a casual browser or a privacy enthusiast, hide.me provides all the essential tools to secure your data and keep your online activities private.

Are StealthGuard and SmartGuard Useful?

When trying out hide.me and reviewing in depth, we paid special attention to its unique offerings: StealthGuard and SmartGuard. These tools offer enhanced privacy options designed to give users more control over their online security. Let’s break down how each one works and how it performs in real-world experience.

StealthGuard to Eliminate Privacy Leaks

StealthGuard is a standout feature in our analysis of hide.me’s privacy tools. It prevents accidental IP address leaks by limiting your entire internet connection or specific apps to an active VPN session.

This feature adds an extra layer of protection to keep your private data secure, even when the VPN is inactive. The best part is you get three ways to configure StealthGuard:

  • Disable StealthGuard: With this option, your internet connection remains active even when the VPN is not. This is the default mode for those who don’t need constant VPN protection.
  • Bind Internet to VPN: This setting restricts all internet activity to the VPN connection. Even if the hide.me app isn’t running, your network remains secure, preventing leaks. It’s an effective safeguard against accidental exposure.
  • Limit Apps to VPN: This feature allows you to restrict specific apps to the VPN connection. Apps like torrent clients or web browsers will only function if the VPN is active, so your critical applications always stay secure without cutting off your entire network.

To test StealthGuard’s capabilities, we felt trying out the Bind Internet to VPN option would be ideal. As mentioned, we lost access to the Internet after disconnecting from the VPN. After testing the rest, we felt that it would be particularly useful for those who want to balance security and convenience with zero risk of leaks.

SmartGuard is an Advanced Customizable Ad Blocker

We used the d3ward Ad-block test to check out SmartGuard. Initially, we disabled it and checked the score on Chrome, and it was around 10%. After enabling it, the score updated to 97%, which makes it an exceptional ad blocker that enhances your browsing experience by blocking ads, trackers, and potentially harmful websites.

The best part of SmartGuard is that it comes with multiple options, including advanced filtering and parental controls. However, the downside is that it doesn’t work with dedicated servers. If you’re affected by this limitation, consider checking out NordVPN. Its Threat Protection is capable of working with all servers without any restrictions.

Does hide.me Keep Logs?

hide.me takes a strong stance on privacy with its strict no-logs policy, which means that it does not track or store any user data related to browsing activity, VPN sessions, or any other online behavior.

Headquartered in Malaysia, not part of the 5, 9, or 14 Eyes alliances, hide.me benefits from local laws that don’t require VPN providers to retain user data, further reinforcing its commitment to user privacy.

An independent audit of hide.me’s no-logs policy was conducted in 2015, affirming their commitment to privacy. However, it’s important to note that no further independent audits have been published since. While the initial audit provides a level of reassurance, it’s always good to see regular audits to maintain full transparency.

Like many VPN providers, hide.me collects minimal data necessary to maintain its services, such as email addresses and aggregated traffic data. However, this shouldn’t raise privacy concerns, as it does not include sensitive information like your real IP address or browsing history.

The collected data is anonymized and stored on encrypted servers, keeping it secure from unauthorized access. This minimal data collection improves service quality without compromising user privacy.

How Does hide.me Perform?

To give you a comprehensive review of hide.me’s performance, we conducted a range of tests to measure its speed, security, and overall usability.

Below is a full hide.me review of how it handles various tasks, such as speed across different servers, leak prevention, and its capability for streaming and torrenting.

Speed Test Results: Performance Evaluation

Speed is a crucial factor when reviewing a VPN, as it determines how well it can support daily tasks like streaming, browsing, and file sharing. During our tests, we measured hide.me’s speed test result across both regional and long-distance servers, evaluating its efficiency across different protocols. Here are the speeds before connecting to a VPN.

Regional Servers

In our test and analysis, nearby servers performed exceptionally well, with speed test results showing a drop of around 10-20%. This minor reduction still helped us stream videos in HD and 4K without interruptions, browse the web smoothly, and even handle video conferencing without noticeable lag. hide.me maintained strong and consistent connections on servers close to our physical location, which makes it a reliable option for everyday use.

Long-Distant Servers

As expected with most VPNs, there was a more significant speed drop when connected to long-distance servers. In our analysis, speeds fell by around 30%, which is typical for such connections.

While still usable for general browsing and streaming HD content, you may experience some buffering during FHD-4K streaming or other bandwidth-intensive activities. However, the connection remained solid throughout the review, giving an uninterrupted browsing and streaming experience.

If you binge-watch and try to access libraries of streaming platforms in different regions with FHD or 4K streaming capability, you might be limited with hide.me, and NordVPN is your best pick.

Protocol Efficiency

hide.me offers multiple protocols, including WireGuard, OpenVPN, SoftEtherVPN, IKEv2, and SSTP. When we tested these protocols, WireGuard and SoftEtherVPN emerged as the best performers in terms of speed and efficiency, especially over long-distance connections.

On the other hand, OpenVPN proved consistent, maintaining the best security and speeds regardless of the server connection. Shifting between servers could be quick as it takes around 5-10 seconds.

Encryption and Leak Test

Security is paramount for any VPN, and in this hide.me review, we proceeded by trying out security features and tested encryption and leak tests to measure how well hide.me safeguards user data.

Encryption Test

hide.me uses highly secure AES-256-bit encryption, which is the industry standard for protecting sensitive information. In our test, we ran data packets through Wireshark to check for any exposed information during transmission.

The results confirmed that all packets were fully encrypted, proving that hide.me provides robust encryption. Rest assured, your data remains unreadable to third parties.

IP Leak Test

During our in-depth review, we performed an IP leak test using tools like ipleak.net. hide.me passed with flying colors, successfully masking our real IP address in all scenarios. The VPN prevented our actual location from being exposed on all servers, which is critical for maintaining anonymity online.

DNS Leak Test

DNS leaks are another concern when using VPNs, as they can expose your browsing history to third parties, including ISPs. We conducted a DNS leak test on Browserleaktest.com, and hide.me successfully routed all DNS queries through its secure servers, ensuring that no DNS leaks occurred.

WebRTC Leak Test

We also tested for WebRTC leaks, which can inadvertently reveal your real IP address even when connected to a VPN. Running the test on BrowserLeaks.com, hide.me blocked all potential WebRTC leaks, securing both our public and private IP addresses. The results were the same after trying out the same procedure on different browsers.

Streaming, Torrenting and Gaming

Beyond speed test results and leak tests, usability is a key factor when evaluating a VPN. Here’s how hide.me performs in real-world tasks like streaming, torrenting, and gaming.

Access Various Streaming Platforms

hide.me supports a wide range of streaming platforms, including prominent ones like Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime Video, and more. When tested, we were able to bypass geo-restrictions and unblock most platform libraries and websites.

You can also rely on it to access YouTube videos that are normally unavailable in your region.

With the dedicated streaming servers, this has become easy. Streaming in FHD and even 4K was smooth, with minimal buffering. However, in distant countries and those with strict restrictions, it slightly struggled to stream FHD content and occasionally had to switch between servers and protocols to find one that could reliably unblock certain regional content.

While hide.me is available in a few countries with high censorship, you might experience instability and have a hard time bypassing the censorship. If this is important to you, read our comparison of VPNs that work in China, or our ranking of the best VPNs for the UAE.

While hide.me may not be on par with NordVPN, ExpressVPN, or Private Internet Access in terms of streaming and bypassing geo-restrictions, it handled most streaming tasks well during our hide.me review and test sessions.

Are the Servers Torrenting Capable?

For users looking to download torrents safely, hide.me supports P2P on all servers. In our test, torrenting speeds were decent, especially when connected to nearby servers.

The added benefit of Dynamic Port Forwarding helped boost P2P performance, allowing for faster download speeds, but keep in mind that it might reduce overall security.

Streaming Servers Hide.me Vpn
© Gizmodo.com

The built-in Kill Switch and StealthGuard kept our torrenting activities private, even if the connection dropped. While it checks the boxes, we weren’t happy with the speeds and when we last reviewed NordVPN — the dedicated P2P and Tor over VPN servers offered us the best speeds and security that we forgot that we were connected to a VPN.

What About Gaming?

For gaming, hide.me offers a decent experience, especially on regional servers with low latency for smooth gameplay. During our review, tests on nearby servers showed minimal lag, making it suitable for competitive online gaming.

While long-distance servers can increase latency, Dynamic Port Forwarding comes to the rescue. As said before, be aware that it might affect security.

If you’re a competitive gamer, hide.me falls behind, and we recommend trying out VPNs like NordVPN, ExpressVPN, or Proton VPN, as they maintain the best security and keep the latency low even on distant servers.

These are excellent VPNs that can be used on Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.

Hide.me Servers: Our Analysis

Server reliability plays a crucial role in determining overall performance and user experience when reviewing any VPN. In our review of hide.me VPN, its server network stands out with over 2,600 servers spread across 91+ countries, providing extensive global coverage.

Standard Servers Hide.me Vpn
© Gizmodo.com

While the server network isn’t as extensive as some of the larger VPN providers, such as NordVPN, ExpressVPN, or Private Internet Access, hide.me’s dedicated streaming and multihop servers keep it afloat by providing secure, fast, and stable connections with decent unblocking capabilities.

In terms of security, hide.me’s self-managed servers do not involve third parties, enhancing privacy. This setup, combined with full IPv6 support and protection against DNS, IP, and WebRTC leaks, guarantees a secure browsing, streaming, and torrenting experience.

We would recommend it only for everyday browsing or bandwidth-intensive activities like streaming, downloading, gaming, or torrenting when done on regional servers.

How Good is Bolt “Fast Proxy”?

hide.me’s Bolt technology promises to boost connection speeds significantly, particularly for Windows users.

We found that Bolt achieves this by bypassing the traditional VPN traffic routes using TCP instead of the more commonly used UDP protocol. This helps avoid ISP throttling and improves performance on networks that struggle with VPN connections, particularly on long-distance servers.

While conducting our review, we experienced a push in speeds with Bolt enabled, making it ideal for those who prioritize fast downloads or need a seamless browsing experience. Bolt’s performance is particularly relevant for those in regions where internet service providers frequently throttle VPN traffic, as it helps maintain consistently fast speeds.

For those seeking an optimized VPN experience with minimal performance compromises, Bolt stands out as a valuable feature within hide.me’s overall offering. Plus, it offers the ability to exclude apps from using Bolt. However, the catch is this feature is restricted to only Windows, so we don’t consider it as a complete solution yet.

Ease of Use & Compatibility

The user experience with hide.me’s app is streamlined and intuitive. The interface is clean and minimalistic across platforms like Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS. While the dashboard on mobile devices is fine, we felt the PC versions were cluttered.

The customizable widgets made it a bit better, but connecting to a specific server without updating widgets requires multiple steps, which is slightly uncomfortable. The rest of the features are easily accessible, and core features can be adjusted from the settings.

Device Compatibility and Simultaneous Connections

Hide.me is compatible with a wide range of devices, covering major operating systems like Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android. It also supports smart TVs, Linux devices (though it’s not one of the best VPNs for Ubuntu, for example), browsers, and routers, allowing users to secure multiple devices simultaneously.

During our analysis, hide.me’s versatility proved beneficial for those who want to maintain privacy across various devices. The premium plan allows up to 10 simultaneous connections, accommodating families or users with multiple devices looking for comprehensive coverage.

Setting Up hide.me on Routers

If you’re looking for whole-home protection, hide.me can be set up on routers, adding an extra layer of security to all devices connected to the network. This router setup ensures that even devices without native VPN support, such as gaming consoles (e.g., a PS5) and smart home gadgets, benefit from hide.me’s encryption.

Customer Support

Having reliable and knowledgeable customer support is crucial for a smooth VPN experience. hide.me provides various support options, but does it deliver the thorough assistance users might require for setup or when encountering issues?

Available Support Channels

hide.me offers a variety of support channels, including 24/7 support through tickets, email, FAQs, and a community forum. However, while live chat is listed, you would end up filling up a small form, where you need to fill in details before initiating a request. This may add a layer of inconvenience, particularly if you’re looking for a quick fix.

Response Quality

From our in-depth review of the support experience, it’s clear that live chat delivers the highest-quality responses. While replies are instant, the absence of immediate live chat slows the overall experience.

© Gizmodo.com

You’ll have to leave a request, often waiting 15 to 60 minutes to get a proper response via email. However, the quality of responses, however, is generally thorough and addresses most issues effectively.

Self-Help Resources

Hide.me’s knowledge base is extensive, offering a range of guides and FAQs. Although many of the resources are detailed, our analysis found that many of them are outdated, especially with changes to the app’s interface. This can lead to confusion for new users who rely on older images and instructions.

Self Help Resources Hide.me Vpn

Despite this, the community forum remains active and can be a valuable tool for troubleshooting or gaining extra insights into specific queries.

All things considered, hide.me’s customer support falls short of expectations. In comparison, services like NordVPN, ExpressVPN, or Private Internet Access stand out with consistently active support agents and regularly updated knowledge bases.

With those providers, we never found ourselves needing to rely on community forums for help—their customer support teams handle troubleshooting, diagnosis, and fixes directly and efficiently.

Final Verdict: Is hide.me Worth It?

When deciding whether hide.me VPN is the right choice for you, it’s important to weigh both its strengths and limitations.

As a privacy-conscious service with strong security features like AES-256 encryption, a no-logs policy, and innovative tools like StealthGuard and SmartGuard, hide.me does a commendable job of protecting your online privacy. It also offers reliable performance on nearby servers and effective streaming support.

That said, there are some areas where hide.me falls short. The speed test results on long-distance servers were found slightly disappointing, and the customer support, while thorough, lacks the immediacy found with some top VPNs. Additionally, some of its features, though valuable, may not offer the level of customization or efficiency that more advanced users might require.

In the end, hide.me is a strong contender if privacy is your main concern and you’re looking for a straightforward, no-logs VPN. However, if you’re after top-tier speed, customer support, and more refined features, we recommend considering alternatives like NordVPN, ExpressVPN, or Private Internet Access for a more comprehensive VPN experience.
