Best VPNs for Nepal in 2026: Privacy and Social Media Access

In September 2025, Nepal blocked Facebook, YouTube, X, and 23 other social media platforms that hadn’t registered with the government, and lifted the ban days later after deadly protests. During that week, Proton VPN reported that sign-ups from Nepal rose to 8,000% over its baseline. Telegram had been blocked since July and stayed restricted after the others returned.

The best VPN for Nepal has to keep working even if ISPs restrict VPN connections during another ban. NordVPN does this with obfuscated servers and its NordWhisper protocol, and Proton VPN pairs its Stealth protocol with an independently audited no-logs policy. Our November tests connected each VPN to its Nepal server from a test computer in Europe (Windows 11, 190.36 Mbps baseline), then tried NTV, Kantipur TV, and Netflix Nepal.

2. Surfshark: Best for Households in Nepal

Surfshark has no device limit, and one subscription can protect every phone, laptop, and TV in a Nepali household. When a network limits VPN use, NoBorders mode detects it and lists the servers that perform best there. Surfshark’s Starter plan comes to about $67 for 27 months, around $2.50 a month, then about $79 a year.

Outside Nepal, Surfshark unblocked Netflix Nepal and both Nepali TV channels, and its Nepal server came in at 142.46 Mbps. It lists four servers in Nepal. On Windows, though, connections took longer to establish than on the other VPNs, especially with MultiHop or OpenVPN selected.

3. ExpressVPN: Best for Restricted Networks

ExpressVPN applies obfuscation to every connection, with no protocol or setting to change, so it’s ready for Nepali networks that block VPN traffic. For viewers abroad, ExpressVPN’s Nepal server was the slowest we tested, at 118.51 Mbps. That’s still ample for HD streaming. ExpressVPN also unblocked Netflix Nepal and the two Nepali channels.

4. Proton VPN: Best for Staying Private in Nepal

Proton VPN’s Stealth protocol is available on every server and disguises VPN traffic on networks that block standard connections. The company’s no-logs policy is independently audited, and it operates under Swiss privacy law. Two years of the VPN Plus plan cost about $72, while one month costs about $10.

Nepalis overseas can choose from 52 Proton VPN servers in Kathmandu, and the one we used recorded 146.38 Mbps. NTV and Kantipur TV played on it, but Proton VPN couldn’t unblock Netflix Nepal, which detected the VPN.

5. Private Internet Access: Best Budget VPN for Nepal

Private Internet Access has a monthly plan at about $12, and the 26-month plan costs about $57, the same amount it then charges each year. For blocked networks, PIA offers a Shadowsocks proxy that disguises OpenVPN traffic.

For streaming from abroad, PIA recorded 151.22 Mbps on its Nepal server, with the lowest ping we saw at 242 ms. That surprised me. PIA has never been a speed leader in our tests, yet on Nepal servers it finished second, ahead of Proton VPN, Surfshark, and ExpressVPN. The Nepali channels worked, but PIA couldn’t unblock Netflix Nepal.

Nepal’s 2025 Social Media Ban and VPN Use

Using a VPN isn’t illegal in Nepal. On September 4, 2025, the day the social media ban began, Nepal Police’s Cyber Bureau warned against unauthorized or unreliable VPNs, citing data leaks and hacked banking apps. Free VPNs are the usual risk. None we checked offers a Nepal server, and some fund themselves by collecting user data. Our free VPN guide names the ones with clean records.

The government elected in March 2026 hasn’t blocked any social media platform, according to reports through mid-2026. If blocks return, ISPs can also restrict VPN connections, so enable obfuscation:

• NordVPN: connect to an obfuscated server, or select NordWhisper as the protocol.
• Proton VPN: select the Stealth protocol.
• Surfshark: enable NoBorders mode.
• ExpressVPN: obfuscation is always on, with no setting to change.
• PIA VPN: on the OpenVPN protocol, enable the Shadowsocks proxy in the Multi-Hop settings.

The same settings apply in the Android apps and on iPhone. For international sites, a nearby location such as India or Singapore keeps ping lower than a server in Europe or the US.

Paying for a VPN From Nepal

Most VPNs bill in US dollars by card, and in Nepal that usually means a dollar card from a local bank. Nepal Rastra Bank allows personal dollar cards up to $500 a year for online payments, which exceeds the cost of any two-year VPN subscription. PayPal hasn’t officially launched in Nepal and can’t link to Nepali bank accounts.

Nepali TV and Netflix From Abroad

From Europe, NTV and Kantipur TV live streams were blocked without a VPN, and every Nepal server we tried unblocked them. Netflix Nepal split the VPNs: NordVPN, Surfshark, and ExpressVPN unblocked it, while it detected Proton VPN and PIA. A Nepal server also unblocks other Nepali streaming services and banking sites that restrict foreign visitors.

Summary

In Nepal, a VPN with obfuscation can still connect if a new social media ban comes with VPN blocking. Nepalis abroad require a Nepal server that unblocks the services they use. NordVPN is strong on both counts: NordWhisper and obfuscated servers cover blocked networks, and its Nepal server had speed to spare for HD streams.
